PATEA HOSPITAL BUILDING. PATEA BOARD ACCEPTS TENDER. Considerable additions and alterations at the Patea hospital, including the provision of a maternity annexe and additions to the kitchen block, will shortly be undertaken. The tender of Messrs. Boon Bros., New Plymouth, was accepted by the board at yesterday’s meeting. There were seven tenders, all under the estimate of the architcts (Messrs. Duffill and Gibson) of £4OOO, and there was £766 between the highest and lowest tenders. The recently-formed Patea branch of the Hibernian Society wrote that it desired to enter into an agreement with the board for treatment at the hospital, apS asking for the conditions upon which an agreement could be obtained. It was decided to advise the society of the conditions. The secretary of the Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board advised that the next meeting would be held at Wellington on Friday. The chairman, Dr. Simmons and Mr. A. T. Christensen will attend the meeting to protest against the discontinuance of the Patea hospital as a training centre for nurses. The matron, Miss Kelly, reported that Nurses Soundy and Gibb had passed their hospital examinations, and would sit for their final examination at Wanganui on December 5 and 6. The medical superintendent, Dr. W. T. Simmons, reported for October as follows: Patients in hospital, males 15, females 11; admitted, 13, 14; discharged, 11, 13; died, 1,1; remaining, 16, 11. Messrs. Lupton and Scown were appointed a visiting committee. There were present Messrs. C. R. Honeyfield (chairman), J. Lupton, A. T. Christensen, W. Back, C. E. Johnston and W. H. Watkins. CLOSING OF SHOPS. CHRISTMAS WEEK AT HAWERA. Hawera shops will be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and January 2, according to a decision made by the executive of the Retailers’ Association. Late nights during tire period will be Christmas and New Year’s Eves, but on the Saturdays before each holiday, shops will be closed at 5.30 as usual. Messrs. A. Blair, L. A. Bone and T. G. Liddington were appointed a sub-com-mittee to discuss the community lighting question with the Borough Council and South Taranaki Electric Power Board. NORMANBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE ATTENDANCES SATISFACTORY. The monthly meeting of the Normanby school committee was held on Monday. There were present Mr. A. Galloway (chairman), Mesdames T. Evans an& W. G. Gane, Messrs, W. H. ■Bennett, C. W. Hardway, P. Whitlock and T. Evans (secretary). The headmaster, Mr. T. Taylor, reported that the attendance was satisfactory, the average being 122. During the month there had been four admissions and no withdrawals. The dental clinic had again commenced operations and the work was proceeding smoothly. Calf judging in connection with the Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs had been arranged to take place at the school on November 16, and it was decided to invite parents to be present on that occasion. A fine New Zealand ensign had been donated to the school by Mrs. Riddle. A letter of thanks and appreciation is to be sent to Mrs. Riddle thanking her for her generous gift. It was also decided to write to the education board asking them to erect a flagstaff in the school grounds. It was reported that Mrs. Gillespie wa- the successful applicant for the position of caretaker and had taken up her duties. The barge board blown from the building during the recent gale had been replaced.

The school had entries both in the calf and pony classes at the show, and it was left to Mr. Bennett to arrange for the transporting of the calves to Hawera. It was also decided to, grant the children a whole holiday on people’s day so that they might attend the show. Arrangements were discussed for the holding of a garden party for the school breaking-up ceremc:.. This is to be held in the school grounds at the end of the term. Messrs. Hardway and Evans were appointed a visiting committee. PATEA DENTAL CLINIC. COMMITTEE REVIEWS HALF-YEAR. The Patea dental clinic committee - reviewed the half year last week, when the chairman, Mr. E. F. Hemingway, expressed pleasure at the satisfactory position. A financial statement tabled by the treasurer, Mr. R. H. Mays, showed a balance of £29 12s lid. With other amounts due which will bring the total to £39 4s lid. The dental nurse, Miss Small, submitted a detailed report of the clinic’s operations during the period. The nurse said there was no minimum age observed unless she was busy, when no child under five years would be treated. The Manutahi and Hurleyville committees wrote stating that they would guarantee the fees of the children attending their schools. In correspondence from the district superintendent the opinion was expressed by him that there would not be sufficient work at Patea to keep the nurse fully occupied. In reply to the chairman Nurse Small said there was a number of children coming forward shortly and she would be fully occupied. PORT OF PATEA. November 12: Sailed, m.v. Hawera.
