CARD CHALLENGE MATCH
OTANGIWAI DEFEATS MATIERE. On Wednesday night 32 players from Matiere visited the Otangiwai hall and played a challenge flag five hundred match against Otangiwai, for a carved and polished shield made and donated by Mr. W. H. Lyon, Otangiwai, for competition between Matiere, Otangiwai and Niho Niho at card tournaments. Matiere’s was the first challenge for the shield, but Otangiwai was successful, winning 122 flags to Matiere’s 101 flags. The winning table was an Otangiwai table comprising Mr. and Mrs. J. Bakwell and Messrs. L. S. Fauchelle and H. Raitt. A Matiere table comprising Mesdames White, Luckman, R. Etherington and G. Etherington, won the consolation prizes. Mr. T. B. R. Julian was in charge of the card tournament. After supper had been served by the members of the hall committee dancing was held, Mrs. E. C. Thomas (piano) and Mr. Garth (violin) playing the music and Mr. C. McDougall being master of ceremonies. A competition was won by Mrs. Davies, Matiere. Mr. Julian on behalf of Otangiwai, thanked the Matiere people for their visit and stated that the Otangiwai team would visit Matiere for a return match. He handed to Mr. F. Pleasants the sum of £2 16s, representing the result of the evening, as a contribution from the Otangiwai people to the fund for building cattle sheds at the Ohura show grounds. Mrs. Pleasants assured all that the Ohura show committee would be very grateful for the contribution received from Otangiwai towards the cattle sheds fund.
