The Canterbury Jockey Club’s spring carnival will conclude to-day, when the principal eVent will be the Metropolitan Handicap. ■ Semper Paratus will only have to reproduce his form of Monday to keep the opposition busy in the Suburban Handicap. Cottingham and Heather Glow have also shown form at the meeting. Th'- Seymour Hack bears an open appearance. Neither Dollar Prince nor Haere Tonu has displayed forin at the meeting but Quite Soon is definitely improving. Colossian is useful' and both Maroha and Owl’s Flight are promising. Tlie favourites may be Quite Soon, ColosCricket Bat’s prospects seem bright in sian and Owl’s Flight. the Members’ Handicap but Silver Streak is showing signs- of returning to form. The Pioneer Handicap has drawn a poor field and the issue would appear likely to lie between the'two Pink Coat juveniles, Silver Coat and Kinnoull. The Metropolitan has drawn a splendid field. The top weight, Vintage, is back : to his best form but he has a solid task ahead of him. Gold Trail’s great second in the Cup draws attention to her prospects. Neiter Polydora nor Red Manfred were impressive in the Canterbury Cup and they will find it difficult to give weight to Davolo and Sweet Agnes. Might appears the best entry in the lightweight division, though the improving Rebel Star might spring a surprise. Speculation will take a wide range but the best supported are likely to be Might, Gold Trail and Sweet Agnes. Scratchmere Scar and Sea Fox have .solid imposts in the Otaio Plate but they look a class above their opponents. Opposition may come from Earthquake, who stays on well. ' Synagogue will monopolise attention in the Stonyhurst Handicap but the Southland representative, Tauramai, should run a creditable race. Should either Synagogue or Sea Fox start in the Cressy Handicap, one or both, would receive good support. In their absence the chances of the consistent Sam Smith look bright; he was sorriewhat unlucky to be beaten on Wednesday. Gaysome and Fair Weather may prove the best of the others. FAMILY OF GREYS. GRAND SPORT’S BREEDING. Grand Sport, winner of the Stewards’ Handicap last Saturday in time equal to the race record, is a grey coming from a family of greys with a great record in New Zealand. He is a five-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Rewanga, by Marble' Arch from Tauhei, by Castor from Vivandiere, a Musket mare bred in 1882. Rewanga’s fame at the stud does not depend entirely on Grand Sport, whose brother, Araunah, tvon races at Melbourne, last autumn, j Tauhei, the dam of Rewanga, had a number of foals, among them being Mira, a Soult horse who stayed well. Tauhei was a sister to Canteen, whose New Zealand Cup win was sensational as it was followed by the disqualification of- his rider, the late J. McCombe, for two years for foul riding. Canteen afterwards was sent to Australia,, where he was sold to the late Sir Rupert Clarke, but he failed to win a race for his new owner. NEW ZEALAND CUP WINNER. WAS ONE OF A JOB LOT. Steeton, the winner of this year’s New Zealand Cup, is owned by a schoolmaster, Mr. T. Baird, 'first assistant at an Invercargill school, though she is raced on lease by Mr. J. B. Macgregor, an Invercargill business man. Mr. Baird was at the meeting on Saturday, but the horse he undoubtedly was hoping would Win was Coilgh, who races in his own colours and who was coupled with the Winner, though he must have been very pleased nevertheless with the result. Mr. Macgregor was not present to witness his success, and the Cup was received by his wife. There is a touch of romance in the early history of Steeton and her removal to Southland, where she has been trained throughout her career. When she was two years old she and several young horses bred by the late Mr. G. D. Greenwood were sent to Southland. One southern racing man, who was at Riccartop on Saturday, describing the deal, said that she was one of a truckload that was sent away and sold as a job line. They turned out. a good investments. The shipment included Cough, also Thornton (a sister to Cough), and Hot Tea, by Tea Tray from the Sutala mare Crete. Mr. Baird, was interested and purchased the whole draft.. He retained Cough, Thornton and Hot Tea for his own racing, but unfortunately the one he leased for her racing career was Steeton. NINE STARTS FOR NINE WINS. WAR BUOY’S FINE RECORD. The owner, Mrs. E. K. Manger, and the trainer, M. B. Edwards, have a useful pacer in War Buoy. He is not produced very often —in fact, he has only been started nine times in two and ahalf years, but this would seem to have, been quite often enough for those who have had to oppose him, as he has won on every occasion.

How good War Buoy really is time alone will tell, but he has proved equal, more than equal, to every task that his -trainer has set him. His most recent success was in the Victoria Handicap at

Addington last Tuesday, when he strolled in, recording 4m. 24 4-ss. for the two miles journey. His record to date is: At two years: Won Advance Handicap: time, 3m. 315., £75.
