WOMEN’S DIVISION

New Plymouth: There was a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting on Friday. It was decided to hold a garden party at Mrs. Frethey’s residence in Holds worthy Road in February. The branch expressed appreciation of Mrs. Frethey’s action in offering her grounds for the day. Mrs. Murch and Mrs. Marfell were appointed voting delegates with the president, Mrs. McPhillips, at the provincial executive meeting. After afternoon tea Mrs. Lankshire gave an interesting and educative demonstration of the making of wreaths and posies, The finished articles aroused much admiration. The hostesses were Mrs Anstis, Mrs. Phelan'and Mrs. Wilkinson. Hawera: The eighth birthday of the Hawera branch was celebrated recently when visitors were present from Auroa, Awatuna, Alton, Eltham, Hunter Road, Fraser Road, Kapuni, Lowgarth, Manaia, Matapu, Meremere, Manutahi, Opunake, Okaiawa, Otakeho and Kapuni branches. Mrs. A. E. Death, president welcomed the visitors. Mrs. J. E. Campbell, Mayoress of Hawera, extended greetings. A musical trio was played by Mrs. Quin, Mrs. Corrigan and Mrs. Thompson. Miss Jessie Henson sang three songs, Miss Ernestine Rowland gave two elocutionary items and little Eileen Dowden danced an Irish jig. Afternoon tea tables were decorated in the division colours and with bowls of Iceland poppies and maidenhair fems. A large birthday cake was made and presented by Mrs. Rowland. It was decorated with small farmyard animals. While the cake was being cut by Mrs. Death greetings were extended to the Hawera branch from, all the visiting branches. Miss D. Corrigan gave an address on “The . Garden of Life.” Bouquets, made by Miss Jean Robb, were presented by Ernestine Rowland to Mrs. Death, Mrs. Benton, Mrs. Campbell and Miss Corrigan. Alton-Kakaromea: There was a good attendance at the Alton-Kakaramea branch monthly meeting this week, Mrs, W. E. Tayler presiding. Mrs. H. A. Sutherland submitted a comprehensive report of the executive meeting. Miss G. Hall, who gave an address on homecrafts some time ago, displayed two finished cane and cross-stitch stools that were commenced during her address to explain the procedure. A demonstration of cake-icing was given by Mrs. A. J. Gibbs, the various methods of achieving dainty and attractive cake decoration being shown. Mesdames Bumand, Olliver and Miss Foreman were hostesses. Huinga: At the monthly meeting Mrs. H. J. Kaye presided over a good attendance. The secretary reported a satisfactory balance from the flag five hundred party held recently. Mrs. Maunsell, who had attended as delegate to the central executive, spoke on matters of importance. A competition for plain scones was judged by Mrs. Groshinski. Mrs. Kingan was the wfrmer, with Miss White second. A competition was won by Mrs. Boyce, with Mrs. Manning second. The making of footstools with tins was demonstrated Miss Leydon. Cardiff: The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday. Mrs. D. Brunton presided over a large attendance. Two new members were enrolled. Mr. Pettigrew gave a lecture on flower cultivation. The competition for the best plate of coconut ice was won by Mrs. R. Perry. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames D. Brunton, P. Marchant and R. Perry, On Wednesday a successful bring and buy afternoon was held in the hall in aid of the Women’s Division. During the afternoon items were contributed by Misses E. Gadsby, M. Brunton, C. W. Wickham, songs; piano duet, Misses D, and M. Hoskin; piano solo, Mrs. P. Marchant Mrs. P. Marchant played the accompaniments. A competition in judging the weight of a cake was won by Miss L. Hollins. Hillsborough: At the last monthly meeting of the year Mrs. Bishop presided over a good attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs. Colson in her recent bereavement. Mr. Ginsli gave a 'demonstration on the care and use of a sewing machine. Mesdames Marsh and Nicoll were the hostesses.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. STRATFORD BRANCH SOCIAL. The Stratford branch of the W.D.F.U. celebrated its seventh anniversary on Tuesday, the gathering being held in the Foresters’ hall. All branches in Central Taranaki were represented, and over 150 women took part. The long rows of tables were decorated with the division colours—red, blue and yellow. On the wall was a portrait of one of the Women’s Division, Mrs. W. J. Polson. The cake, for which all members contributed ingredients, was made and decorated by the president, Mrs. M. G. Trotter, who presided. • . - Proceedings opened with the National Anthem and the creed, after which all stood in silence in sympathy with a member, Mrs. G. Dick, who has recently lost her husband. A welcome was extended by the president, and good wishes for the branch were expressed by Mesdames R. Masters (Stratford), Brunton (Cardiff), Cocker

(Eltham), Belcher (Pembroke Road), Dill (Midhirst), Ayers (Matau), Metcalfe (Pohokura), Piper (Lowgarth), Williams (Huiroa), Lees (Toko), Hucker (Ratapiko), Maunsell (Huinga) and Harris (Pukengahu). Aftemon tea was served by the committee, and the birthday cake was cut by Mrs. W. H. H. Young, one of the first members of the Stratford branch. The • lucky seat competition was won by Mesdames Stokes, Brunton and Dill junr. The prize for the song-naming competition went to Mrs. Hucker. The musical programme consisted of songs by Mesdames Clark, Stokes, Cranton and Lamplough, recitations by Miss Ruth Oliver and dancing by the Misses Ross. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. G. Strack.
