DUKE AT BALLARAT
GOLD IN CASKET PRESENTED.
OPENING OF BAND CONTEST.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.
Ballarat, Nov. 2.
A blackwood casket containing three gold nuggets was presented to the Duke of Gloucester on his arrival in the historic city of Ballarat to-day from Mildura as a reminder of the important part that gold had played in the early history of Victoria. The Duke was particularly interested in Ballarat’s war memorial, taking the form of an avenue of honour containing 3900 trees, each dedicated to a soldier who had served in the war. Bands attending the centenary band contests assisted at the civic welcome at the city oval. After the Duke had declared the contest open the Woolston Band (N.Z.) and the Melbourne Fire Brigades Band demonstrated the quickstep. None applauded more heartily than the Duke the haka by the Woolston Band after the march past. The band contest is to continue until Saturday. The Woolston Band was given a warm reception by the other bandsmen. No results of the contests will be available till Saturday.
