PLANTING OF TREES.
The first meeting of the newly-elect-ed committee of the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held at New Pb™ o "* yesterday. Present: Messrs. H. C. Sampson (chairman), J* H. Alien, A. T. Modre, E. S. Smith notified that the Department of Agriculture had received authority for the payment of £5O as a subsidy on the Katere experimental area. Members of the committee ex-
pressed’ appreciation of the grant. Messrs. Duncan and Davies, J. Groom and A. R. Gudopp were thanked for donations of trees for the Waiwakaiho showgrounds. The chairman reported that a row of pohutukawas had been planted between the hedges. Ims
would enable improvements to be ei- i fected later. Native trees had been, planted near the river, with a view to providing shelter and shade as well as beautifying the grounds. The committee had in view ultimately the planting of all waste areas on the showgrounds, which should become ideal picnic spots on show days. , The Taranaki Regiment was granted tire use of the buildings at the show- : grounds for week-end bivouacs to be held on the next two week-ends. Mr. W. H. Miers, Hamilton, Wrote accepting the position of judge of the Jersey section at the next show. The following new members were elected: Messrs. E. Deacon (New Plymouth), W. E. Donald (Omata) and W. Hogg (Waitara). A suggestion that an event to test the working capabilities of the entrants should be included in the horse section of the schedule was discussed by members, but did not find favour. The proposal, which was brought forward by Mr. E. S. Allen on behalf of an bitor, was that the horses entered should be asked to pull, say, a ton on a sledge, as directed by the judge. The president did not favour the competition which, he said, would not serve any good purpose or appeal to the public. Members generally agreed, Mr. Pearce adding that it was the worst possible thing to ask a horse to take a heavy pull on a cold shoulder. It was decided to convene a meeting of district representatives to discuss proposals for increasing the membership of the association. . ' The next winter show will be held on June 11, 12, 13 and 14. The chairman reported that the subcommittee comprising representatives of the Farmers’ Union and the society had decided to hold a farewell smoke concert for Mr. J. M. Smith. It is proposed to make a presentation from the farmers of the whole district, subsciiptions to be limited ’to a nominal amount.
