LIVESTOCK MARKET
VALUES AT FEILDING SALE. CATTLE PRICES EASIER. Feilding, Oct 26. Prices for run cattle took a distinct turn downward at the stock sale to-day when the yarding was 50 per cent, above advertised numbers, comprising principally P.A. and Herefords, with a fair sprinkling of Jerseys in the yearling section. Throughout the sale the market was dull, the general opinion being that previous rates were too high. Bidding was very restricted, with prices dropping by 5s to 10s for grown and 7s 6d to 10s for young cattle. Some exceptionally good pens of Hereford and P.A. bullocks offered failed to reach the owners’ reserves. Cows and heifers for fattening purposes sold relatively better than the male entry, but here again prices were considerably lower than previously. Some nice lines of P.A. yearling heifers were submitted, but not many were sold at auction. Prices for these generally were down 10s a head. Good Shorthorncross steers reached £4 10s; Hereford bullocks, £4 19s; P.A. bullocks in good forward condition, £5 12s 6d; P.A. steers, to £4 7s; P.A. and Hereford-cross bullocks, £4 6s; good Jersey store heifers, to £3 ss. The dairy cattle market was very lifeless with many lines hard to quit. The fat cattle sale opened briskly with very good prices, best ox beef going to 26s per 1001 b, and cow to 20s, but the sale slumped as soon as butchers’ limited requirements were met.
