BELL BLOCK CONCERT
ENTERTAINMENT BY CHILDREN. ATTENDANCE OF LARGE NUMBER. A concert was held by the children of the Bell Block branch of the Red Cross Society in the hall on Thursday afternoon. There was a very good attendance. The following programme was presented: Opening chorus, “Marching Through Georgia”; pianoforte solo, “Repay Band,” Joan Rundle; crow song, Joan Rundle and chorus; recitation, “Mother’s Hairpin,” Noel Wey;. duet, Clock,” Jean Erskine and Mabel Walbran; recitation, “Patricia’s Pig,” Barbara Jury; action song, “Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron,” Jean Erskine; character song, “Let’s Grow Old Together,” Joyce Parkin and Jean Jury; solo, “When I’m a Grown-up Lady,” Janet Aitken; “Toymaker’s Dream,” Joyce Parkin and Part of the play, “The Lady with the Lamp” was then presented, the characters being Janet Aitken, Flora Jury, Jean Jury, Nancy Colson, Verna Jury, Joan Rundle, Noel Wey, Coljn Colson and Ken Morgan. After the concert Sister Small, Red Cross nurse, was introduced and presented with a bouquet of lilac by Joyce Parkin. Sister Small congratulated the children upon their splendid effort. She explained to the children the objects and work of the society. Parents and friends were entertained to afternoon tea in the supper room by the young hostesses who had decorated the tables with vases of flowers. The sum of £1 2s was cleared at the door and with the sale of sweets by Betty Macdonald and Judy Jeffery. General and Personal.
On Wednesday afternoon a meeting of St Luke’s ladies’ guild was held at “Holmleigh,” the residence of Mrs. W. Holmes, when there were 16 present, the president, Mrs. J. H. Street, presiding. The balance-sheet of the spring flower show was brought forward, a very satisfactory profit being shown. Dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. W. Holmes and Mrs. Mallon. Mrs. E. Johns entertained at her home on Wednesday night in honour of her brother, Mr. F. Fuller, and Mrs. Fuller, Tonga, a large gathering of relatives and friends being present. Dancing, games and community singing were held, and several solos were given.
On Thursday evening Misses Macdonald were hostesses at a party at their home. The evening was spent in community singing, dancing, games and competitions. Mr. Colin Hoskin and Miss Joan Rundle won a Monte Carlo waltz and Mr. MacDonald and Miss May Mahlon won a competition after a dead-heat with Mr. Ray Hoskin and Miss Joyce Hoskin. Music for the singing and dancing was supplied by Mrs. W. Hoskin and Miss Macdonald. Mrs. T. French and Mrs. J. H. Street motored to Lepperton on Thursday afternoon where they acted as judges of the cooking classes at the annual sale of work of St. Mark’s ladies’ guild.
Mrs. R. L. Parkin, who has been an inmate of a New Plymouth hospital for some weeks, has returned home and is making steady progress towards recovery. Helen Walbran met with a painful accident when she dropped an axe, severely cutting her foot and necessitating medical attention. Mrs. H. Street is the guest of Mrs. J. H. Street.
