MUNICIPAL BAND BALL
PATEA EFFORT SUCCESSFUL. The Patea Municipal Band’s first annual ball on Monday was completely successful, dancers attending from a wide district. No effort had been spared to ensure patrons a crowded programme of gaiety amid a carnival atmosphere of melody and colour. Vinsen’s Ambassadors Orchestra and the Patea Municipal Band contributed an entertaining programme that kept the gay company, many of whom were in fancy dress, in carnival humour. Variety was introduced by the “execution” of a stealer of band instruments by members of the Ku Klux Klan, and the efforts of Farmer Giles to rope a very angular and skittish heifer to the strains of “The Last Round Up.” The transformation of the hall by the clever use of the band’s colours of blue and gold contributed much to the happy note that prevailed. Radiating from a gigantic lyre that formed the background of the stage, blue and yellow streamers spread out and over the hall, coloured lights and balloons being .distributed through the colourful canopy. The dress circle facing was draped with blue, bearing golden musical symbols. The carnival fox trot was danced amid showers of confetti, streamers and balloons, the coloured spotlights continually transforming the scene. A novelty feature of the evening was the railway dance, which delighted patrons, the winners being Miss Fitzsimmons and Mr. Forsyth. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Miss Morrison and Mr. Lethbridge. The difficult task of judging the fancy dresses was undertaken by Mesdames F. Ramsbottom, C. Masters and G. Williams, who awarded the prizes donated by citizens to Mrs. F. W. Locker (Coster), Miss M. Nansett (Hawaiian), Miss A. Hall (Caterpillar) and Messrs J. Julian (Mae West) and Mr. C. Bradshaw (Chinese). The most prizewinning entry was that of Messrs R. Adams, C. Beauchamp and T. Burgess (Farmer Giles and his cow). The proceeds are for the purchase of new instruments.
