WINTER SHOW PLAN

ELTHAM PROGRESS COMMITTEE. SUCCESS OF THE JUBILEE EVENT. The Eltham Progress Committee met on Tuesday night, Mr. G. H. Mann presiding over a good attendance. The chairman welcomed the new members of the committee and expressed the hope that all would work for the good of the community. Mr. Bridger said it was pleasing to see new members taking an interest in the work of the committee. The nightwatchman, Mr. H. J. Drabble, said he had reported 22 complaints of neglect affecting business premises during the month. Arrangements for the Christmas distribution of toys were discussed, and it was decided to appoint a collector for each division of the town with a view to collecting money for the toys. Messrs. I. J. Bridger and F. Bush were empowered to purchase the toys required. It was also decided to ask the bands to participate in the Christmas Eve festivities. The question of taking steps to secure an auction mart for handling, farmers’ produce lines was considered and Messrs. Morton and Bridger were deputed to act with a sub-committee of the Chamber of Commerce, Messrs. G. W. Peebles and E. A. Walsh, with a view to approaching a firm with which negotiations had been made for the conduct of sales. A suggestion that Eltham run an annual winter show was made by Mr. C. N. Taplin, who referred to the great ■•success of the industrial exhibition at the time of the jubilee and said he believed an annual fixture would be equally successful. He thought the idea would be acceptable to both town and country residents. From a small beginning the exhibition might grow and become a big affair. The jubilee exhibition proved a wonderful advertisement for Eltham, he said, and had diverted trade and business to the town. Mr. I. J. Bridger endorsed the suggestion and thought that while a winter show might be too ambitious a project, an annual exhibition on the lines of the jubilee display should be a pronounced success. Perhaps the jubilee exhibition committee could be prevailed on to run such an annual event. It was decided to invite the jubilee Industrial exhibition committee to meet a sub-committee with a view to forming a permanent industrial exhibition organisation. Messrs. Bridger, Butler, Jackard and Taplin were appointed the subcommittee. PERSONAL. Mr. R. Macßae, Wanganui, is staying for a few days with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rod Macßae, Stratford. A vote of condolence with the relatives of the late Mr. T. B. Crump was carried at a meeting of the Eltham Progress Committee on Tuesday. The chairman (Mr. G. H. Mann) referred to the sterling worth of Mr. Crump and said his loss would be greatly felt by the community. A STRATFORD COURT SITTING. JUDGMENT IN .CIVIL CLAIMS. At the fortnightly sitting of the Stratford Magistrate’s Court held yesterday before Mr. W. H. Woodward judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the undefended civil case of Egmont Newspaper Co. v. Dorothy Baker for £4 12s (costs £1 3s 6d.) On a judgment summons R. B. Kidd was ordered to pay Dr. B. B. Armstrong £5 16s, in default five days’ imprisonment. Costs were 15s 6d. E. Petterion was ordered to pay G. S. Scott Ltd. £2 Is 4d forthwith, in default three days’ imprisonment. ELTHAM TALKIES. “GEORGE WHITE’S SCANDALS.” Songs, dances and humour abound in George White’s “Scandals,” which will be shown at the Eltham talkies to-night and to-morrow night. From first to last the picture is a bewildering array of glamorous scenes, each containing its own definite appeal. As the picture unfolds, the spectator is tempted to wonder whether anything more artistic can be forthcoming, but his doubts are completely dispelled as each interlude reveals scene after scene of amazing intricacy and beauty. The thousands who have listened to Rudy Valee’s caressing voice over the radio will welcome this opportunity of seeing and hearing him in person on the screen. That he can thrill an audience by his voice, there is no doubt, but in “Scandals” he shows that he can also act. The humour is left in the able hands of Jimmy Durante and Cliff Edwards.
