INCREASE IN PAY
WORK IN RELIEF. CAMP, FIVE SHILLINGS A WEEK SMALL FARM PLAN RISE OPERATION THIS MONTH By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night An increase of five shillings a week in the payment of single men in relief camps and a new scale of increases for men employed under the small farms scheme was announced by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. J. Bitchener, in ■ the House to-night The new scales are to operate in every case as from October 1. In single men’s camps the rate is increased from 10s to 15s a week and “found.” The weekly scale for the small farms scheme is as follows: Single men (without food) 255, single men provided with food 15s, married men (wife only) 375, with wife and one child 40s, with wife and two children 425, with wife and three or more children 48s weekly. No instructions have been issued in respect to payments under the No. 5 scheme, but on all other relief works controlled by the Public Works Department the men are to receive a 5 per cent, increase on the. contract prices, but no back pay. This, it is explained by the Minister, relates particularly to land improvement work which is being carried out under financial arrangements made by the Unemployment Board with the settlers.
