MATIERE HAT TRICK

PERFORMANCE BY G. RUTHERFORD. MATCH WITH ONGARUE TEAM. The first cricket match of the season between Matiere 'and Ongarue was played on the "Matiere domain' on Sunday. Steady rain set in at. lunch time and made playing conditions difficult. At 4 p.m. the rain was so heavy that the game was abandoned. Before the match commenced Mr. A'. V. Ross was elected captain and Mr. G. Rutherford vicecaptain of the Matiere team. Ongarue batted first to score 75 runs (J, Delaney 42). Matiere replied with 37 runs (R. Julian 11). Matiere followed on and quickly scored 92 for six wickets (G. Rutherford 37 not out, L. 'S. Fauchelle 22 and A. Sampson 13). The innings was then declared closed. Ongarue had put on 20 for no wickets when the game was abandoned. A feature of Ongarue’s first innings was the splendid bowling of G. Rutherford, the Matiere captain, whose first over produced the hat trick for no runs. He finished the innings, with five wickets for 17. runs. Details of the play are:—
