TRACK AND STABLE

TRENTHAM PROSPECTS GOOD SUPPORT FOR POLYDORA. GRAND SPORT IS A GOOD HACK.

(By

“Hurry On.”)

Will Make Amends. After his attractive performance on the opening day Kelly was a well fancied runners in the Hobson Hack at Ellerslie on Tuesday. However, he failed to act up to expectations, never really looking dangerous. The distance, seven furlongs, may not have been far enough for him and he is likely to do better later on. Being by Kilbroney, he is one of the most promising young staying hacks in commission. Big Money. The Aga Khan recently offered Gordon Richards a retainer of £7OOO a year plus 10 per cent, of all winnings, According to English writers this would amount to something between £15,000 to £20,000 per annum. The contract was to be for three years. Tempting though this offer was, the crack jockey turned it down. Throughout his career he hag been intensely loyal to the Darling stable and even the big offer failed to break this connection.

Will Carry Support. The Chief Ruler filly Headmistress has shown greatly improved form this season, having scored one first and been placed fourth on the occasions of her other three starts. In her first appearance in open company she ran a capital race into fourth position behind Carfex in the Camavon Gold Cup at Foxton. She worked really well over a mile at New Plymouth on Tuesday and will have a good following in the cup at Waverley on Monday. Broke a Girth.

Flower Bag was running along nicely with a round to go in the Onehunga Steeplechase at Ellerslie, when his girth broke and he had to be pulled up. His next outing will be in the Hunt Cup at Cambridge on Monday when he is expected to put up a good showing. He is a wonderful fencer, having yet to make a mistake either in a race or in the hunting field. Cyclonic in Form.

Cyclonic accounted for the opposition in the Grandstand Handicap at Masterton just like a good horse, going away when his rider asked him for an effort. He has been accepted for in both the Wainui Handicap and the October Hack on the opening day at Trentham but It is understood that the latter event is to be his mission.

Fancied for Trentham. After her decisive win at Thnaru there will be plenty of southern money for Polydora in the big handicap at Trentham on Saturday, The daughter of Folazel is evidently right back to her best form. She is a slow beginner but possesses a great finishing run. The big roomy course at Trentham should suit her admirably. Horses Return.

A good contingent of New Zealand horses returned to Wellington on Monday. They were Marcus Cicero, Hine Ra, Custodian, Diatomous and Autopay. Of the whole number Autopay was the only one to have won a race on the trip. He will probably be seen in action at Trentham on Saturday. At Stonyhurst Stud.

Recent foalings at the Stonyhurst Stud with the names selected for the youngsters are as follows: Eastern Sky, bay colt by Jericho from Winsome Hind; Great Memory, bay filly by Magnus from Retrospect; Rival Hit, chestnut colt, by Winning Hit from Rivalry; Counter Blast, bay filly by Jericho from Counterscarp; Harwick, bay colt, by Winning Hit from Brave Deed; Stone Frigate, brown filly, by Nightmarch from Sailor’s Love; Great Bramble, bay filly, by. Magnus from Brambletye, and Mob Rule, bay filly, by Winning Hit from Babel. The 17-year-old mare Moorfowl died at -Stonyhurst last week after delivering a dead foal to Paper Money, In addition to this list, Disdainful, owned by Mr. G. MurrayAynsley, last week produced a foal to Winning Hit Both Unlucky.

The Waverley Cup winners in Carfex and Korokio took part in the King Edward Memorial at Ellerslie on Tuesday. Both, however, received none of the luck of the running, striking trouble at critical stages. This was unfortunate as backers have now no real linq as to their capabilities over the mile and a quarter journey. In the mile and a half Mitchelson Cup Korokio finished second and her rival fourth. In this event Carfex conceded the mare Hlb but will be meeting her on two pounds better terms on Labour Day. A Solid Performance.

Grand Sport appreciates the sting being out of the ground. The conditions at Ellerslie on Tuesday were to his liking and he lumped home the steadier of 9.8 in the Hobson Hack in good style. Ellis spon had him in a handy position, tucked in behind the pacemakers. Making his effort at the distance he finished solidly to score by a neck. He figures in the Rimutaka Hack at Trentham on Saturday with 9.5 but will probably be rehandicapped for that event.

Returning Home. The Auckland rider L. Dulieu, who has been in Australia for some months past, will return to New Zealand next week. He made the trip across the Tasman to ride Royal Visitor and during his stay won once on this horse and once on Playground.

A Good Cheque. The ex-Hawera jockey M. McCarten had a successful time at the recent Randwick carnival, his cheque amounting to £276. Incidentally he earned £3B 10s for R. Reed when he piloted Nightly home on the final day. The connections of Nightly were not satisfied that their horse would do his best for Reed and substituted McCarten. Reed, however, claimed that he had been engaged for the meeting and this claim was upheld by the stewards. Reed therefore had to be paid the amount of a winning ride.

What is the Secret? One of the most interesting features of the recent A.J.C. meeting (says a Melbourne writer) was the phenomenal run of success by New Zealand-bred performers. Their amazing record was all the more remarkable because of the fact that Australian-bred performers greatly outnumbered those Dominion bred, and it has raised the question, which now crops up almost annually, whether New Zea-land-bred horses possess something that Australian-bred gallopers lack. That there is something is almost beyond doubt, and experts, trying to define it, have advanced various reasons, but the general view is that the mineral content of the Dominion, and the naturally luxuriant fodder give quality and bone to horses that Australia cannot hope for. In support of this contention there is the case of Red Manfred. Sired in Victoria, by Manfred—Redshank, Red Man-

fred was foaled and reared in New Zealand, where he proved one of the best of his age at two and three years, winning, among other races, the . Wanganui Guineas, Harcourt Cup, Great Northern St. Leger and Derby, and King’s Plate, in which he defeated Nightly. Not one of the Manfreds that have raced in Australia has proved outstanding, although some have been useful, and scores of them have attempted to secure turf honours.

For years now New Zealand-bred horses have found Australia a happy hunting ground, but it is doubtful if they have had greater success than at the recent A.J.C, carnival.

Not in Stud Book. Since Silver Coat won the McLean Stakes and the Dominion Handicap at Wingatui recently, there has been a good deal of discussion regarding his breeding. One statement that Patalwork, the grandsire of Silver Coat’s dam, was a halfdraught is denied by “St. Clair” in the Dunedin Star.

Patalwork, says “St. Clair,” was well known both in the hunting field and over the Riverton steeplechase course, and if fie was not thoroughbred he looked the part. As a five-year-old in 1891, and again two years later, he won the Great Western Steeplechase, and in those days the Riverton country was admitted to be the biggest and stiffest in the Dominion. For some years before being put to stud duties he was ridden by Farquhar McKay, then huntsman to the Birchwood Hounds, and occasionally by his owner, Captain James Gardner, Birchwood Station.

There have been many good horses in England, Australia and New Zealand who have not been eligible for inclusion in the stud books, and it certainly looks as if Silver Coat is going to add to his number. There is one strong feature in his favour. All the sires known in his pedigree had plenty of the masculine character about them. Patalwork was a son of a very handsome thoroughbred stallion named Cloth of Gold, who stood in the South Canterbury district for some years before going to Southland, and it is worthy of note that one of the few hunters ever shipped from the Dominion to the Old Country was a son of his. His name was Golden Grape. He was bred by Mr. John Sutton, Thornbury; and he was taken to England by a sportsman named Mr. Armitage, who forty years ago was well known in the North Canterbury district.

Another ChangeLord Derby created surprise last year when he dropped G. Lambton as his trainer. Last month he caused another sensation by deciding to terminate T. Weston’s engagement as his first jockey It is said they parted on the best of terms.

Weston has been Lord Derby for eleven years, and for that owner won the 1924 Derby on Sansovino, and the 1933 Derby and St. Leger on Hyperion. Other important winners ridden by Weston for Lord Derby were Tranquil, Toboggan, Fair Isle, Colorado and Fairway. Weston’s retaining fee was £3OOO a year and, as it is stated he also received 10 per cent, of prize money, he has been on a good wicket. During the past 11 years Lord Derby’s average in prize money has been about £35,000 a year. R. Perryman is to succeed Weston. Although Perryman holds a retainer from Mr. H. de Rothschild, he has . done a lot of succesful riding on the Aga Khan’s two-year-olds this season. It was on the recommendation of C. Leader, who now trains for Lord Derby, that Perryman was offered the appointment. Weston may do some of Lord Derby’s lightweight riding. GREYMOUTH TROTTING ACCEPTANCES FOR SATURDAY.
