SECRETARIES MEET
AUSTRALASIAN INSTITUTE. EFFECT OF NEW COMPANY LAWS. The annual meeting of the New Zealand division of the Australasian Institute of Secretaries was held at Auckland recently. Mr. L. C. H. Dawson presided. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the chairman said New Zealand members numbered 213 out of the total institute membership of 2350. An increasing number of candidates was offering for examination, there having been 42 at the September sitting. The chairman stressed the need for specialised training for, since the passing of the new Companies Act, the duties of a secretary had been considerably increased. The maintenance of a high standard of qualification was essential to the proper skilled lecturers to address members on various aspects of the Act and encouraging candidates to present themselves for examinations that specialised in company law it was hoped to achieve this end.
Mr. F. H. Bass, Wellington, said the Wellington branch was making rapid progress. The retiring councillors, Messrs. H. B. Burnett, L. C H. Dawson, G. O’Halloran, N. Porter, and T. E. Whitton, were re-elected. Mr. F. H. Bass was appointed to fill a casual vacancy on the council.
The election of ificers resulted as follows: President, Mr. N. Porter; vicepresidents, Messrs. T. E. Whitton and H. G. Thomson; treasurer, Mr. H. B. Harper; Australasian- councillor, Mr. G. O’Halloran; auditor, Mr. H. Gilfillah.
