GYMNASTIC DISPLAY
PERFORMANCE OF HIGH ORDER. EXERCISES AND DANCING. Gymnastics of a high order were witnessed at a display given at Hawera on Tuesday night and repeated last night. The work showed evidence of physical fitness and careful training on the part of the instructors, Mr. V. M. Gerrand and Miss Lorna' Campbell. The women gave displays of exercises and dancing and the men gave exercises and performed on the horse, rings and on parallel and horizontal bars, and gave a display of tumbling and pyramids, the latter with and without the women, The women taking part were: Misses Lorna Campbell, N. Williamson, G. Reid, N. Reid, J. Durham, M. Murdoch, P. McGlashan, Lexie Campbell, M. Young, M. Glass, M. Lamb, J. Stevenson, N. and E. Matheson, L. and T. Aberley. A. Watts, T. Young and J. Easton. The following men took part: D. Ekdahl, J. Weston, F. Clarke, B. Clapham, J. Clapham, J. McKee, W. Nicholas, D. and R. Lloyd, G. Russell, C. Jones, G. Brown, C. Lacey and G. Crawford. Those who took part in a play on Tuesday night, “Aunt Lizzie’s Friend,” were Misses J. Easton, J. Fyfe, Lorna Campbell, Lexie Campbell, M. Glass, N. and M. Matheson and D. Corrigan. Violin solos and vocal solos were rendered by Mr. R. Maunder on Tuesday night. During both evenings orchestral numbers were played by an orchestra consisting of the Misses M. Fox, O. Fox, R. Watson and Mr. McConnell. The items given last night were: Mandolin duet, Messrs. Antoni Bonetti and B. Watts; vocal solos, Mrs. 0. Hartmann. Accompaniments to the physical exercises and the other items were played by Misses G. Reid and R. Duff, Mrs. Bonetti and Mr. G. McConnell. Mr. J. McKee was the announcer. “BRING AND BUY” MART. ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY EFFORT. A successful “bring and buy” mart was held in the Hawera band room yesterday afternoon, in aid of the funds of the Hawera Orchestral Society and the Hawera Main school. Items were given during the afternoon, and goods were freely bought. The committee controlling the arrangements comprised Mesdames J. Carter, Lendrum, Westwood, W. Snowsill, Lester, Pearce, Misses D. Swadling, Rogers and Messrs. H. N. Lester arid Westwood. Afternoon tea was served by the combined women’s committees. Enjoyable excerpts from “The School for Scandal” were read by Mr. W. G. Simpson and Miss Corrigan and other items contributed were: Piano solo, Miss E. Kelsen; songs, Mrs. Gregg and Miss J. Henson; violin solos, Miss Betty Pinson. Mrs. Snowsill and Miss Rogers were accompanists. KAPUNI W.D.F.U. EVENING. CONCLUSION OF SEASON. The concluding evening’s entertainment of the season was held by the Kapuni W.D.F.U. on Tuesday in the form of a flag five hundred tournament. There was a good attendance and the event was most successful . The prizewinners were Mesdames H. Whalen and G. Eliason and Messrs. G. Revell and D. Walker. A competition for a sheep was won by Mr. H. Eliason. Dance music was played by Mr. B. Eliason and humorous songs were contributed by Mr. Hughes. MANAIA DISTRICT NEWS. PERSONAL AND GENERAL ITEMS. . The funeral of Mrs. Anne Hannah Silvester was at Manaia on Tuesday. The service was held at her home, and later left for the Manaia Cemetery. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. R. Miller. Many wreaths were placed on the casket. The pallbearers were Messrs. J. Hickey, J. Shearer, T. McKay, D. Borrie, V. H. Hobday and G. H. Meuli. The Manaia Municipal Band, under Conductor J. A. G. Cosgrove, gave a recital in the rotunda on Saturday evening. Mr. J. Imlah and his son Arthur left last week for Australia, where they will attend the Melbourne centenary celebrations. “It is with very deep feelings of regret that we refer to the death of one of our early vice-presidents, Mr. T. C. List,” says a paragraph in the last bulletin of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club. “For a great many years the late Mr. List took a very keen interest in all activities connected with the mountain, and the result of his work is evidenced in many directions in Egmont National Park.” PORT OF PATEA. OPERA HOUSE ATTRACTION. Few recent pictures have been received with such delight as A. A. Milne’s “Dover Road” starring Clive Brook and Diana Wynyard and shown under the title of “Where Sinners Meet.” The picture was well received last night by a Hawera audience at its first showing at the Opera House. It will conclude to-night. A splendid supporting cast includes Billie Burke, Alan Mowbray, Reginald Owen and Phyllis Barry, former Australian stage star. In wit and subtlety the picture is one of the finest made for some time and is a delight from beginning to end. To-morrow, in a return two-day season, “Carolina,” with Janet Gaynor will be shown. The story portrays the awakening of sleepy old Carolina by a northern girl who has the knack of infusing life into everything. Miss Gaynor wins further laurelg as an outstandingly versatile actress and she is well supported by Lionel Barrymore, whose acting is as polished as ever, and Robert Young, a handsome youth of great potentialities.
