WOMEN’S DIVISION

Waverley: The Waverley branch of the W.D.F.U. held a social afternoon on Friday to celebrate its birthday. There was a good attendance, including Mrs. Wickham, who had been present at the opening of the branch, Mrs. Polson and Mrs. Scott, Wanganui. The programme was as follows: Piano duets, Misses Beer and Christensen; songs, Mrs. Graves, Mrs. Corbett and Miss Hamerten; recitation, Mrs. Graves. Mrs. Macfarlane thanked those who brought linen and books or had helped with the gathering. While tea was being handed round Mrs. McLean (Wanganui provincial W.D.F.U.) cut the cake. Toke: The president of the branch presided over an attendance of 33 at the monthly meeting on Wednesday. The Misses McDonald (2), Standish Road, were welcomed as new members. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs. Raynor in the death of her sister. It was decided to accept the invitation for about 20 members to attend the birthday party of the Stratford branch. The Stratford branch also invited Toko members to attend the monthly meeting at Stratford. Letters of thanks were received from the Porirua Mental Hospital for magazines and from the disabled soldiers' committee at Wellington for goods sold on behalf of the committee. Mesdames Maxwell, Murphy, Murray and L. Milne (visiting committee) reported having visited several sick people. The committee appointed for next month comprised Mesdames Platt, Petch, Rowe and Misses L. and N. Sextus. It was decided to hold a flag five hundred party in November for the funds of the branch and to provide money for the Stratford relidi committee. Gardening hints were contributed by members. The competition for a madeira cake was won by Mrs. Lees, with Mrs. E. Milne second and Mrs. Hedgeman third. Points prizes were won by Mrs. Harper (23 points), Mrs. I. Grierson (16 points) and Mrs. E, Milne (14 points). Miss K. Jones gave a demonstration of art silk painting and was accorded a vote of thanks. Eltham: Several new members were welcomed by. the president, Mrs. J. Cocker, at the monthly meeting. A demonstration of wool rug-making given by Mrs. Kelly, Tirimoana. A finished rug of beautiful design was exhibited. Mrs. Kelly was accorded a vote of thanks. Support was given to the proposal to establish a high school at Eltham, it being felt that such a school would be of benefit to country children.

Otakehb: The monthly meeting was held last Friday. Mrs. C. Fleming presided over a large attendance. Miss D. Corrigan, Hawera, delivered an address on her travels through Belgium, France, Switzerland and Germany before and after the Great War. A competition was won by Mrs. Langley, with Miss Flo Whitcom.be second. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames McDonald, Langley, Hastie, Ahier and Murphy. Mrs. A. Hastie, a new member, was welcomed. Huiroa-Kiore: The October meeting of the Huiroa-Kiore branch was held on Thursday. Mrs. Williams presided over an attendance of 14. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs. G. Ritchie, a former member, in the sudden death of her daughter. It was decided to hold a dance. There was a large entry for the embroidered apron competition, which was won by Miss Blair, Mrs. Cooper being second, The afternoon closed with community singing and tea, hostesses being Mesdames Cooper and Mitchell.
