18 MONTHS’ DETENTION IMPOSED.
JUDGE VIEWS CRIME SERIOUSLY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. “If you had had a clean record I might have considered dealing with you more leniently, but you have not a clean record,” said Mr. Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court in sentencing Thomas Boyle Dennis, aged 31, a motor mechanic, on charges of forgery and uttering, forged documents and the’ theft of a motor-car. ' t “The theft of motor-cars is a very prevalent offence. It does a great deal of harm to owners because their cars are generally ruined through the ill-usage they get. It seems to me that in the public interest J must inflict a sentence that will act as a deterrent. The sentence of the Court is that you be detained for reformative treatment for periods not exceeding 18 months, the sentences to be concurrent.
