LARGER WICKETS

NORTH TARANAKI CRICKET DECISION MADE BY EXECUTIVE. ARRANGEMENT OF COMPETITIONS. The larger wickets will be used in senior competition cricket matches in North Taranaki and in representative matches this season. The executive committee had previously discussed the advisability of using the larger wickets in such matches and had placed a remit before the Taranaki association, which carried it, subject to there being no objection from the New Zealand council. Yesterday the North Taranaki executive received a telegram from the New Zealand council stating that it had no objection, so the North Taranaki executive passed the necessary resolution last night. ' It was reported that West End and Westown schools were keen to take advantage of the offer of Mr. Parkinson to coach the boys and that he had already commenced coaching at West End. The chairman reported that arrangements had been made to purchase two mats from Messrs. Cook and Lister. It was resolved to play the senior competition in three rounds of two-day matches. The chairman pointed out that, including December 29, there were 22 Saturdays to March 31. That would leave four Saturdays for other matches. It was decided that the hours of play should be from 2 p.m. to 6.15 p.m.

The chairman and secretary were appointed an emergency committee. Notification was received from the secretary of the Inglewood Cricket Club withdrawing the club’s entry from the senior B Saturday competition on the grounds that there would be an uncertainty of fielding a team later in the season. The club considered it would be fairer to the other teams to withdraw. Mr. G. A. Clarke pointed out that there would', now be a bye in each of the senior B and junior grades. Rather than have two teuns. standing down each Saturday he asked whether it was too late now to regrade on'’ of the senior B teams to the junior grade . Mr. Baird suggested it would be more in the interests of cricket to raise .one. of the junior teams to senior B. There was a possibility that the senior B team which might be brought down to junior grade might be too good for the other | junior teams. A suggestion was made that one of ■ the High School teams might be placed in the senior B grade, but in view of the fact that the High School found difficulty in fielding junior teams in holidays it was preferable to keep tiie two teams in the one grade. Mr. R. Sarten suggested that the teams which drew the bye in each grade should be drawn to play each other every Saturday. That would give the junior players experience. Mr. Sarten considered Waitara might be agreeable to enter the senior B grade. It was decided to circularise the clubs pointing out that it was intended to arrange matches between the teams that had drawn the bye in each grade once the competition; was under way.. The teams in each case would be responsible for the payment of ground fees. Mr. H. J. Abram said the Umpires’ Association proposed to appoint two umpires to each of the senior games and at least one umpire to each other match. That umpire would be in control of the game and the appointment of the second umpire would be arranged by the captains, subject to his approval. There were present Messrs S. O. Jones (chairman), G. A. Clarke, F. J. Eggleton, F. Beard, '• R. Sarten, H. J. Tarkin and H. J. Abram (hon. secretary).
