RECORD IN OPEN TITLE

BOLGER WINS AT SYDNEY UNITED STATES VISITORS BEATEN. SARAZEN MAKES COURSE RECORD. AMAZING GOLF IN FINAL ROUND. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.20 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 14. Leading the field throughout, W. Bolger won the open golf championship of Australia with a total of 283. The leading scores, the third and fourth rounds and the grand total being given, were:—

Others included Gray, 71—80 —301, Von Nida 76—75—302, Bettington 76—75—303, and Kelly, the holder, 76—77—305. Bolger played remarkably steady rounds to-day, the outstanding feature

being his accurate approaching. Sarazen reduced Bolger’s lead by three in the third round, and after a poor start in the final round played amazing golf, securing an eagle and three birdies at successive holes. He needed birdies at the last two holes to beat Bolger, but he was unequal to the task, taking three putts on each green. ■ Sarazen’s 68 is an official course record. Bolger’s total of 283 is a record for an Australian open championship, beating Kirkwood’s 290 in 1920. Kirkwood was erratic with his drives, pushing, many into the rough, but he played very steadily in the final round. Spence was a model of consistency, as illustrated by his scores. Ferrier’s was the best score of the amateurs. During the night vandals damaged five greens, cutting large pieces of turf away and breaking flag sticks and tee boxes. They also broke sprays and water pipes. The damage was discovered in time for returfing to. be done, and play in the championship was not delayed. Sarazen, paying a tribute to Bolger’s victory, said: “I never expected to have to beat the record when I entered. Bolger and possibly Spence, should be sent abroad for the big contests.” Sarazen and Kirkwood to-day at Le Perouse defeated C. Campbell and S. Richardson, 6 up and 5.
