STRATFORD GOLF TITLE

N. P. GREEN CHAMPION R. STRACHAN DEFEATED 6 UP AND 4 PARTICULARLY POOR CONDITIONS. Showing exceptional skill with his approach shots, N. P. Green defeated R. Strachan 6 up and 4 at the week-end in the final of the Stratford senior championship. Conditions were very bad, heavy rain falling throughout the match and making miniature lakes in the lowlying areas. The match was played over 36 holes. Strachan played splendid golf but he found Green’s approaching a strong point that he could not master. After about seven holes Green required only one putt from his approach shot and that accuracy was a big factor in his win. He did not, however, have a runaway victory. From being two up on the first nine holes Green increased his lead to 7 up at the end of the morning round. During the afternoon Strachan pulled up and held Green well, but again Green's skill at approaching won him holes. Each played excellent golf despite the conditions. Ordinarily there would have been a large crowd following the game but the weather reduced the followers to the umpire and the two caddies. No matter what precautions were taken the grips of the clubs could not be kept dry and that factor must be remembered when the scores over the first 18 holes are considered. The umpire was Mr. J. S. Lyons, Green did over the first nine holes in 41 to Strachan’s 43, leaving Green two up at the turn. Over the second nine Green did 38 to Strachan’s 43. In the afternoon Green started with a four to Strachan’s five on the first hole but at the second Green’s approach was too strong and he was in the rough, which ultimately cost him seven for the hole to Strachan’s five. On the third Strachan topped his drive, letting Green win by five to six, but at the next he holed in three to Green’s four and made the fifth in five against Green’s six, Green having found the hazard with his driver. Strachan was unfortunate at the sixth when his drive landed near a tree and he was penalised. The seventh was Green’s with a well played four to Strachan’s five, but Strachan won the eighth three to four. The home hole was halved in fives, leaving Green seven up at the end of 19 holes. Strachan played three fine shots to the green and sank a splendid putt to win the 10th four to five, but at the next Green, with a magnificent stroke, sank his approach putt for a birdie three and became dormy 7. Where another player might easily have thrown the game in, Strachan outplayed Green and took the twelfth by 5 to 6, following the rally with a beautiful putt that won him the thirteenth and lie dormy 5 down. On the fourteenth, however, he found the hazard with his drive but played a remarkable recovery shot down the fairway only to overrun the green with his third, whereas Green was on. Strachan's ball hung on the lip, while Green sank his for the match. Over the first 18 holes Green’s scores were 79 and Strachan’s 86. Many club members are glad to break 80 on a fine day and Green’s 79 in the ,wet gives an indication of what Strachan was up against. The finalists for Mr. E. S. Rutherfurd’s trophy, O. Lyons and T. Maguire, went out to play but the game was cancelled by the match committee.

G. DALGETTY CHAMPION

HAWERA INTERMEDIATE TITLE. MATCH AGAINST R. C. JORDAN. G. Dalgetty won the intermediate championship of the Hawera Golf Club by defeating R. C. Jordan 5 up and 4 in a 36-hole match. Especially in the morning round the conditions were as bad as possible and the play of both suffered a good deal. Dalgetty, however, was affected less than Jordan and he played steady if not brilliant golf for the title. In the semi-final of the senior championship, W. G. Walkley defeated J. Tarrant 1 up, qualifying to meet L. Bishop in the final. In the semi-finals of the Haig Cup Robb and Bremford beat Lawn and Thomson and Chisholm and Thrush beat Sagar and Stead 4 and 2. Dalgetty turned on an 86 in the morning round and stood 6 up at lunch against Jordan, who had attacks of duffing which gave him few chances. In the afternoon Dalgetty won the 18th and stood seven up, Jordan then winning three holes. At the 27th Dalgetty was three up, Jordan winning the 28th. Dalgetty won the next and the holes were halved to Fairfield, where Dalgetty won the match. In spite of the' bad conditions, he played good golf. Walkley and Tarrant had an even struggle, Tarrant winning three consecutive holes to stand 1 up at the turn. He could not hold the lead, however, and the left-handed player won. A feature of Saturday’s play was a fine 75 by C. O. Pratt, who went out in a splendid 34. Coming home he could not keep the form of the first half and dropped several strokes, but the round was nevertheless noteworthy. TE NGUTU GOLF TROPHIES. PRESENTATION TO WINNERS.
