MURDER AT RIGA
ARCHBISHOP KILLED BODY SOAKED IN PETROL VENGEANCE SUGGESTED DISPUTE WITH BISHOPS By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Riga, Oct 12. Firemen who were called to extinguish a fire in the summer residence of Archbishop Johan, Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, found a body bearing knife wounds. It had been soaked m petrol and set on fire. Eventually the body was recognised by the teeth as that of the Archbishop. Clues suggest that four assassins are implicated. It is suspected that the murder was an act of vengeance in connection with a dispute between the Primate and some of the biships. The Archbishop was to have given evidence in the court to-day ag.Vnst members of the congregation and priests for embezzling cathedral funds. Archbishop Johan was previously in Russia, where the Soviet condemned him to death in 1921, but Latvia secured his release.
