PRESENTATION OF MEDALS

TE ROTI SCHOOL CONCERT HELD. There was an excellent attendance of parents and children ,for the Te Roti school concert last Friday and at the conclusion the chairman, Mr. M. Condon, thanked all who had assisted, especially the teacher, Mrs. Finch, and the performers. The funds, he said, would be devoted towards the new concrete tennis courts and in this respect he paid tribute to the assistance given by Mr. A. L. Campbell, chairman of the Eltham County Council, in arranging for shingle. Mr. Campbell replied, congratulating the school on presenting such an excellent concert. The medals won in the calf-rearing competitions were presented to the winners as follows: Byrt Jordan, first for condition in Jerseys; Michael Condon, condition and dairy type in Holsteins. An attractive playlet was one of the chief features of the programme, the players being: Neal Bluett, Dawn Hill, Mavis Clement, Gavin Cleaver, Des Hills, Barney Brunold, Basil Mortlock, Frank Clement, Con Colman and Bob Condon. Michael Condon and Bernard Finch were stage managers. Other contributions to the programme were: Chorus, all scholars; recitation, Bob Condon; choruses, senior girls and junior girls; action song, John Bluett, Nancy Stokes, Don Thorp; comedy song, boys; song scena, June Morrison; folk dances; fairy dance, infant girls; sailor dance in costume, infant boys; recitation in costume, Marie Brunold; Chinese character song and dance, senior boys and girls. Mrs. Attrill played the music for the dance that followed and Mrs. A. L. Campbell played an extra. Mr. D. Turkington was the winner of a competition for a nightdress. PERSONAL ITEMS. Members of the Hawera Boy Scouts Committee on Friday night paid tribute ■to the work as chairman of Mr. L. H. Carrel, who is leaving the district shortly. Mr. W. G. Strange thanked Mr. Carrel for the excellent way he had looked after the scouts’ affairs. Mr. Strange was elected chairman pending a permanent appointment. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Vivian, Hawera, /have left to spend six weeks’ holiday at Melbourne during the centenary celebrations. The Rev. John Ings, Hawera, is a delegate to the Baptist Assembly at Wellington. The loss which the bowling fraternity in Taranaki had suffered in the death of Mr. Robert Hicks, patron and an early member of the Hawera club, was referred to by the president, "Mr. D. McCormick, at the opening of the club’s season on Saturday. His genial manner and his wide knowledge of the game had endeared him to bowlers on dvery green that he visited, said Mr. McCormick in expressing condolence with his widow and relatives. Miss J. Johnston, Mokoia, is recovering from her illness and has returned to her home from the hospital. Mr. J. Hawken, Mokoia, is an inmate of a private Hospital at Hawera, and Mr. Knight, Mokoia, is in the Hawera hospital. & ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. Having for nearly three decades ensured the success of many Patea organisations by its unselfish co-operation, the Patea Municipal Band is at last finding time to help itself. The band ball tonight, particulars of which appear in another column, can scarcely fail to be successful. An enterprising committee has for some time been working on a carnival programme for the entertainment of patrons at the first annual ball. Vinsen’s Ambassadors’ Orchestra has been retained. The annual meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce will be held in the Borough ' Chambers, Hawera, on Thursday next at 8 p.m.
