STILL IN BALANCE

BRITISH RURAL RECOVERY.

“HAD TO DO STRANGE THINGS.”

Speaking at the annual conference at Edinburgh of the National Federation of Rural Approved Societies, the Post’s London correspondent reports, Mr. Walter Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, said:—

“We have had to do strange things. .We have had to take stern measures —measures which may mean difficulty in agriculture and possibly misunderstanding in the towns. These are the great issues which are still in the bal'ance. The latest returns show that the decrease in agricultural labour in England is still going on. The battle is not nearly won. There are fewer agricultural labourers this year than there were last year. “To all of us in agriculture, and especially to the approved societies, that is a vital matter. It is not enough to say that the Government is taking wide steps. We have got to keep the facts of the case constantly before' us, and -the facts show that while we have, made a good start, we have not done more than that. If we are to achieve that stabilisation and increase in agriculture which we all hope will come about in the not too distant future, it can only be by close and active contact with the landowners, the farmers and the land workers.”
