TARANAKI ACTIVITIES MEETINGS OF INSTITUTES. WIDE VARIETY OF INTERESTS. Franklcy: The monthly meeting was held on Tuesday. Owing to the very wet weather only 20 members were present. Three members, were elected to the general committee," Mrs. Ballahtyne, Mrs. Goodacre and Mrs. J. Paton. Delegates appointed to attend the half-yearly council meeting were Miss P. Arden and Mrs. J. Paton. The treasurer’s report showed that a profit of SI 19s had been made on the series of dances held. Miss Crawford gave a talk on the forming and work of a drama circle. A play entitled “Taking the Chair” was read by Mrs. N. Allen, Mrs. Famum, Mrs. Brooke, Mrs. Smith, Miss T. Goodacre and Miss Crawford. The accompaniments for singing were played by Miss G. Kenny and Miss N. Henry. Hostesses were Mrs. McGiven and MissPeggy McGiven.

Riverlea: The monthly meeting of the institute was held on Wednesday. There was a large attendee and five new members were enrolled. Mrs. Harre presided. The roll call, “Childrens Funny Sayings,” brought forth some amusing stories. The competition for gingerbread was won by Miss E. Chapman, with Mrs. Hey second and Mrs. Chapman, third,’ This was judged by Mesdames Smith and Gardiner. Mrs. Smith, Opunake, gave a demonstration of soft toy-making and had an interesting collection of toys to show. Seed was distributed for the potato-growing competition. Mrs. Josephson offered her grounds for a garden party in aid of federation funds. A special demonstration of model figure-making was held last month and proved so popular that another afternoon has been arranged. A “market” stall was held and all goods were sold. A stall of basketware from the Blind Institute did brisk business. Mrs. Josephson and Miss Rutherford were hostesses for the aftemon.

Tikorangi: At a meeting on Wednesday afternoon Mrs. A. Whitehead presided over a good attendance. The president introduced Miss Drew, New Plymouth, who gave an instructive talk on some of the work aimed at and carried out by the National Council of Women. A vote of thanks was passed to Miss Drew. A competition for the best floating bowl arranged in soup plates drew a large number of entries and was won by Miss L. Pruden. Another competition, for things found in the kitchen resulted in three members tying for first place; Mrs. J. Gamer won the draw.. The hostesses were Mesdames Roy Jury, Ron Foreman and A. Allen. They had arranged the tables with bowls of lilac and Argentine pea flowers. Ngaere: The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday, Mrs. Koefod _ presiding over an attendance of 30. Owing to the bad weather, the garden party,to have been held at Mrs. Walker’s was postponed till next Thursday.. A demonstration on smocking was given by Mesdames Brett and Koefod. A guessing game for the names of New ’ Zealand towns was won by Mesdames Lithgow and Loveridge, equal. The competition for the month, for the best plate of sausage rolls,' was judged by Mrs. Taylor, who demonstrated the making of sausage rolls last month. The awards were:—Mrs. Arthur 1, Mrs. Harris 2, and Mrs. Walsh 3. A peggy-square quilt made up by Mrs. Bonner, was on view. It is - to be given to Mrs. Bridger, Mayoress of Eltham, to dispose . of. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Pederson, Seed and Misses Pederson and Seed, assisted by Misses Coleman and Watkins.. >,w■ ; ;

Kaitake: Nine members attended the monthly meeting at which programmes for November and December were arranged. A memory competition was won by Mesdames Lawrence and Matthews. Members of the committee were hostesses.

Turuturu: There was a good attendance at the last general meeting of the Turuturu Women’s Institute. An interesting demonstration of ■ something new from something old was given by Mrs. Phillips, Normanby. Mrs. Eaton, Rissington, Hawked Bay, was a visitor. Mrs. W. Ritter and her helpers were during tea the many and varied Uses of lemons were discussed. Many entries were received for the competition for a jam jar of flowers, which was won by Mrs. Ritter, Mrs. Beauchamp was second and Mrs. Meharry third. The report of the drama circle showed that good progress was being made.

Turi Township: The monthly meeting was held on Wednesday. The president, Mrs. W. Shaw, welcomed a large number of members and visitors from other institutes. The competition for four plain scones was won by Mrs. Spink first and Mrs. Ingrain was second. Mrs. W. Adams gave a demonstration on leather work, showing how to lace and finish articles. The first of a series of five minute talks by members was given by Mrs. J. W. Harding. She chose for her subject the introduction of Christianity in the neighbourhood. This was listened to with great interest. The large iced cake given by Mrs. Shaw was cut into four pieces. The winners were Mr. R. Thomas, Mrs. J. Harding and Mrs. Dowdn. -A play reading given by members of the- drama circle entitled “Banns of Marriage” was much enjoyed. Mrs. W. Shaw and Mrs. King were appointed delegates to the half-yearly federation meeting. The hostesses were Mesdames Fyson, Frisk, Gilliver, Evans and Stuart. Tariki: A successful group meeting was held in the Tariki hall on Friday afternoon, representatives of the Inglewood, Kaimata, Norfolk and Tariki' institutes being present. Mrs. W. Brown, Norfolk, occupied the chair. Mrs. Brown introduced Mrs. Uniacke, Stratford, who gave an interesting talk on drama. The Inglewood delegate presented Mrs. Uniacke with a floral bouquet. The programme comprised vocal solo by Mrs. Stephens, Stratford, formerly of Tariki, a chorus (in costume), by the Norfolk delegates, recitation by Mrs. Braybrooke, Inglewood, and a one-act comedy, “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” by the Tariki members. Mrs. Uniacke gave a short criticism of the comedy. Votes of thanks were passed to Mrs. Uniacke and Mrs. W. Brown.
