QUEEN CARNIVAL

TARIKI CROWNING CEREMONY. GREEN AND GOLD CANDIDATE. Despite the weather there was a good attendance in the Tariki hall on Tuesday for a dance and euchre party as a finale to the Tariki Ladies’ Hockey Club’s queen carnival. Visitors were, present from many parts of Taranaki. Music was by Hooker’s Merrymakers. Extras were given by Messrs. H. Humphries and T. Wright,, while Mr. H. Gush was master of ceremonies. The hall presented a carnival appearance with its canopy overhead forming a large spider’s web with coloured balloons suspended. During the evening progress of results were announced and by the time the final results were announced interest was keen.

The two candidates were introduced by the president, Mr. H. Gush, who proclaimed the green and gold candidate, Miss D.'James, first with 1563 votes and the red arid white candidate, Miss G. Rumball, a close second with 1327 votes. Mr. Gush said the carnival had been organised to raise £l5 arid had only gone a month, when the fine sum of £36 2s 6d had resulted. He thanked all those who had assisted.

Two little attendants, Carol Therkleson and Ruby Gush, came forward attired in white satin ankle-length dresses and silver coronets and with graceful curtsies presented each with a posy of their respective colours. Master lan. Robertson, attired in amber satin suit, bearing the crown upon a scarlet cushion, carried out the role of page boy. The president crowned the green and gold candidate queen of the carnival and presented each candidate with, a small token of appreciation on behalf of the club. Each received a gold signet ring and string of crystal beads. Mr. T. Wright on behalf of the men’s club endorsed Mr. Gush’s remarks. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. Herlihy'arid Mrs. McChonnachie. In the euchre room, controlled by Mr. T. Wright, the results were: Ladies, Mrs. Fabish, senr., 1, Mrs. L. Loveridge 2, Mrs. Horsnell, consolation, Mrs. P. Kovelski, lucky seat; men, Messrs. Bert Dombroski, senr., 1, H. Kerr 2, E. Haines, consolation, G. Butler, lucky seat. Supper was served by a ladies’ committee comprising Mesdames Therkleson, Robertson, Gush and Miss A. Huzziff assisted by Misses J. Therkleson, O. James and N. Gush. Personal Items. Mr. Haines, Waiongona, and his daughters paid a short visit to Mr. and Mrs. Horsnell recently. Mr. F. Laurence, who is an inmate of the New Plymouth hospital, is progressing favourably. Miss Eileen Goodwin is spending a holiday at Taihape. Mr. L. Duncan has left Tariki to live at Mangatoki. Mr. A. D. Adlam, a member of the Tariki Hockey Club, has left for Wellington to join the police force. . Mr. Thomas Synnolt, who died at Hawera recently, was the father of Mrs., Evans, Tariki.
