ARRESTED BY MISTAKE
MAN WHO WAS HELPING POLICE An unfortunate experience befell Mr Percy Everest, of Maidstone, for after he had gone to the assistance of a constable who was being attacked, he found himself arrested when police reinforcements arrived. • . _ Amends were made when, in the local Court, he was thanked by the Mayor, Aiderman William Day, for going to the assistance of the police. “It is unfortunate that you got run m as well,” the Mayor added. It was stated that at night there was a disturbance in Maidstone High Street. Constable Finn was struggling on the ground with Cyril Porter, and was surrounded by a crowd of several hundred people, when Everest went to his assistance/ * Everest seized the constables truncheon and began to beat off Porter. Other police arrived, and in the melee which followed Everest was arrested with Porter and taken to the police Porter was sentenced to three months imprisonment for assaulting- the officer and fined 10/- for being drunk and disorderly.
