CANDID* LABELLING

MEDICINES AND REMEDIES. REGULATIONS GAZETTED. Amending regulations under the Sale of Food, and Drugs Act and bearing upon the preparation and labelling of a number of familiar remedies and medicines were gazetted on Thursday. The remedies concerned include medicines containing alcohol, also such medicines as casfor oil, eucalyptus oil preparations,, goitre remedies and glandular preparations. The regulations state that in the case of medicines containing ethylic alcohol, “there shall be written in the label attached to every package containing a proprietary medicine sold for internal use by man, which is compounded with ethylic alcohol in greater proportion than five parts per centum proof spirit, in bold-faced sans serif capital letters, the percentage proportion of proof spirit contained in it.”'

It is’ also provided that “there shall be written in the label attached to every package containing castor-oil which is sold for internal use by man, in boldfaced sans serif capital letters of not less than eight point face-measurement, the words, ‘For internal use.’ ”

Eucalyptus oil put up for internal use or inhalation must henceforth be specifically labelled in terms that reveal the composition of the oil. Dealing with, goitre remedies, the regulations state: “For the purpose of these regulations the expression ‘goitre-remedy’ includes every substance in regard to which a claim is made, either directly or indirectly, whether by advertisement or by any statement or words appearing in the label or wrapper on the package containing such substance, to the effect that it is suitable for the prevention, alleviation or cure of goitre. There shall be written in the label attached to every package containing a goitreremedy of which iodine or any compound of iodine forms an ingredient a declaration of the parts per centum of iodine and/or compound of iodine contained in the substance.

“In addition to the foregoing requirements there shall be written in the label attached to every package containing any goitre-remedy the following words: ‘Danger—This preparation should not be used except under medical direction.’ ” This latter provision applies also to glandular preparations.
