“CHATTY” GOLF
WHY MISS KAY WAS DISQUALIFIED SCOTS CHAMPIONSHIP INCIDENT. How a “chatty” game of golf and a touch of influenza put two New Zealand women golfers out of the Scottish foursomes championship was explained by Miss 0. Kay in an interview with the Daily News at Hawera. When the reporter questioned her about the celebrated occasion where she and Miss Gaisford, playing in the Scottish foursomes, had committed the error of allowing her to drive off two successive tees, thereby earning disqualification, Miss Kay gave the facts .of the case. Miss Gaisford, she said, had been "ill with influenza and on the day before the tournament had just managed to walk about the room. Consequently, neither was particularly keen on playing. Miss Kay, to husband Miss Gaisford’s strength; decided at the start to play as safely, as possible and to place all shots down the middle, even if the length was not great. The resolution was of little use. . In six out of the first seven holes, Miss Kay placed her shot in the bunker, giving Miss Gaisford ,an opportunity to shine in spade work.’ By this time both were in the “giggly” stage and the opponents being inclined that way, the golf was “very chatty." At the eighth . tee, Miss Kay was just teeing up when one of her opponents said it was not her honour. Miss Kay said it was and so a count back was made. It was then discovered that Miss Kay had hit off from the fourth and fifth tees without anybody noticing the breach.
