MYSTERIOUS JOURNEY
TWO MENTAL PATIENTS CROSSED BY FERRY STEAMER. THEIR SURRENDER AT AUCKLAND. LIBERTY FOR A FORTNIGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. I Two patients who escaped from the Sunnyside Mental Hospital, near- Christchurch, almost two weeks ago succeeded in making their way to Auckland. They have now presented themselves to the Auckland Mental. Hospital . authorities and are in the institution at Avondale. While details of how the m@n came to leave Sunnyside are not available, the patients, both of whom are fairly young, evidently experienced no difficulty in crossing from Lyttelton to Wellington by the inter-island ferry steamer and avoiding detection. They travelled north to Auckland by easy stages, walking some of the distance and obtaining rides from motorists. The men had evidently been at Auckland several days before they gave themselves up to the authorities. To do so they travelled by tramcar, and during the journey commented to a man on the tram that they had become tired of travelling about. They seemed especially satisfied that they had been able to escape suspicion throughout their long journey, and that they were returning to supervision on their own initiative.
