STEAMER HITS A BIG FISH

MAUNGANUI PASSENGERS’ THRILL.

SEEN SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Sept. 17.

When the Maunganui was about a day out from Papeete (Tahiti) she struck a sea monster, causing some alarm and anxiety among the passengers. She had to go astern to free herself.

Some months ago the Maunganui, on her way from Papeete to San Francisco with Mr. Zane Grey on board, sighted a similar animal which Zane Grey described as 50 feet' long and 10 feet across the nose.

The ship’s doctor says that the animal struck on the present trip was the same one or similar to it. Zane Grey at first said the monster was a whale, but after- ■ wards said that it was not a whale but a great fish.
