OPUNAKE CROQUET CLUB

REVIEW OF PAST SEASON.

APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS,

Th; annual meeting of the Opunake Croquet Club was presided over by the president, Mrs. R. S. Jenkin. The balance-sheet read by the secretary, Mrs. P. Dalrymple, showed a credit of £1 2s 7d. The president in a review of the season said they much regretted the serious illness of Mrs. Davey. Although only a new player she was showing great promise, and they hoped she would soon regain her health and strength. The most notable feature of the club season was the improvement in the play of the junior members. Their interest and . eenness in the game were a great encouragement to the seniors, for it was from the new members that the club derived its strength. During the year Several cups and trophies were played by the senior and junior members, and the standard of the play was well maintained, some very close games being witnessed. Mrs. and Miss Feaver represented the club at Hawera and Wellington tournaments, and Mrs. Jenkin at New Plymouth. The club congratulated Mrs. and Miss Feaver for getting into the semi-finali In the handicap doubles at Wellington, and Miss Feaver for winning the silver plate and trophy in the C grade at the Wellington tournament; aLj for winning the C grade association button at Hawera. It was a very creditable performance for such a young player and new member. Owing to the state of the lawns the club decided to have them attended to during the winter, and they had been topdressed. Members would enjoy better play as the lawns had been improved wonderfully for the extra money spent on them.

During the winter bridge parties were held and were very successful, helping the funds considerably. It was hoped to open the season early so that members would be able to get plenty of play before the tournaments began. Thanks were due to Mr. Gunson for help given, to Mrs. Fisher for auditing the books, and all those who assisted the club; also to the caretaker (Mr. Cameron) for the splendid maimer in which he had looked after our lawns. Officers elected were: President, Mrs. R. Ritchie; vice-presidents, Mesdames T. N. Watt and R. S. Jenkin; secretary, Mrs. P. Dalrymple; committee, Mesdames Sinclair, Gunson, Clouston and O’Sullivan; selection committee, Mesdames Feaver, Sinclair and Jenkin. The club will officially open the lawn on the second Wednesday in October.

Oddfellows’ Ball. The Oddfellows’ ball on Wednesday night in the town hall was a very pleasant and sociable success. The members of the Star and RebCka lodges were present in regalia, as were also visiting members from the same order. Hooker’s Merrymakers’ Band provided the music, and Messrs. J. Munro and J. Clouston were masters of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr. P. Harding and Miss E. Cate and a bobbing waltz by Mr. M. Fennell and Miss Cox. The final euchre party of the second series in aid of tire Catholic Church funds was held in St. Patrick’s hall on Friday night. The prizes were won by Mrs. C. Cameron and Mrs. J. Hickey and Mr. J. McElligott and. Miss McKay. Points prizes were won by Mr. H. Wasley and Mrs. J. Hickey and Mrs. O. Northcutt (tied for the ladies).
