FINAL FOR CHATHAM CUP

AUCKLAND BEATS CHRISTCHURCH. THISTLE TEAMS IN CONTEST. By Telegraph—Press Association. ' Wellington, Last Night. The largest gathering to attend a Soccer match at Wellington since the Chinese team’s visit in 1924 saw Thistle (Auckland) defeat Thistle (Christchurch) by two goals to one in the Chatham Cup final. The game was made the occasion of a Scottish celebration, pipers and Highland dancers entertaining the crowd. The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe were present, the former presenting the cup to the Auckland team. The match was not so good as some previous contests, but nevertheless it was fast and exciting. There was little between the teams but credit must go to Auckland, which played a man short throughout the second spell through McCosh (captain and right-back) injuring a leg. Auckland played against a strong southerly in the first spell. Play had been in progress 25 minutes when Walker squared a beautiful ball to Adam, who flicked it past Gerrard for the first goal. The scores at the interval were still Christchurch 1, Auckland 0. Auckland hammered hard in the second spell and the equaliser came when Watson sent in a stinging drive and G. Sutherland in attempting to clear deflected the ball into his own net. Five minutes before time Wood received in an excellent position, eluded G. Sutherland and sent the ball past Mitchell, the final scores being Auckland 2, Christchurch 1.
