PUKEKURA PARK TENNIS

SUCCESSFUL SEASON REVIEWED.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CLUB.

A very sound financial position is shown, in the annual report of the Pukekura Park Tennis Club to be presented to the annual meeting on Wednesday night. To erect the new pavilion, which cost £337 (contract price), stated the report, it was necessary to raise a loan of £lOO, and it has, in addition to the ordinary expenses, already repaid £4O. Although the club did not actually command the same position in the Soffe Cup competition as it did the previous year, some good tennis was played, and very close finishes fought, particularly with Inglewood, the cup . . The new pavilion, of which the club was justly proud, was officially opened on the opening day of the season. The late Mr. T. C. List, the first president, and Major F. W. Sandford, Messrs. Dempsey, R. Cock and J. Scanlan, early members of the club, were present and took part in the proceedings. The building is attractively and conveniently designed, and an asset not only to the club but also to the park and town. An important innovation was the arrangement of a series of 14 week-end matches with country teams. These outings were arranged largely by Mr. Jack Smith and Mr. C. Area, and thanks were due for the efficient manner in which they were conducted. Clubs yiete Visited at Auroa, Hawera, Manaia, Oaonui, Okaiawa, Otakeho, Ruakura (Waitara), Stratford, Tongaporutu, Uruti and Warea. Several progressive and Yankee tournaments were conducted during the seaCongratulations were extended to the Inglewood Club on winning the Soffe C Club competitions were well patronised and resulted as follows:— Championships: Men’s singles (Webster Cup), Mr. C. Des Forges and Miss J. Medley. The handicap competitions were conducted this year on the system of handicapping by sixths, and most members would agree that the change proved a distinct success. The results were:— Men’s singles (Stevenson Cup), Mr. P. Dickson; ladies’ singjes (Mac Ewan Cup), Miss N. Garcia; men’s doubles, Messrs. R. Bullot and L. Cottier; ladies’ doubles, Misses N. Garcia and G. Broad; combined doubles, Mr. R. Bullot and Miss J. Walton. In the club ladder, interest again was well maintained, a total of 132 matches being played during the season. , j The A team defeated Waitara ana Rotokare in the Soffe Cup 'competition, but lost to Inglewood, New Plymouth and Waiwaka. At the close of the season the following players represented the club on the North Taranaki ladder: C. H. Des Forges (sth), C. Little (Hth), R. Jones (13th), T. Dickson (14th). In the Taranaki match against Waikato the club was represented by C. H. Des Forges. Thanks were due to Miss G. Avery, Mr A. Stevenson and Messrs. J. B. MacEwan and Cd. Ltd., for the donation of trophies; to Messrs. Cook and Lister for the donation of a racquet, and to Mr. Geo. Brown for a donation. The club was indebted to those ladies who were responsible for the dispensing of afternoon tea, to the press, and to all members Who assisted to make the season a successful ofle. It was with regret that the club recorded the death of Mr. T. C. List, the first president of the club and a trustee since its inception. To his relatives was extended heartfelt sympathy. Satisfaction with the newly-completed club house is expressed in the report of the croquet section of the club. It was .a beautiful and useful building. The thanks of the club were due to all who donated gifts for the furnishing of it. The lawns were in splendid order, and during the winter card evenings were held to provide funds for their upkeep. The finances were in a very sound state, a credit bank balance of £4 17s 6d remaining after a full season. During

the season teams were entered for the Bennett Cup, Pcilew Shield and interclub competitions, and showed good form.
