DRAMA LEAGUE FESTIVAL

11 ENTRIES RECEIVED AT HAWERA. PLAYS AND PLAYERS ENTERED. A total of 11 entries has been received by the Hawera branch of the British Drama League for the festival on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. St. Joseph's Hall has been chosen for the productions, and the finalists will take part in the North Island elimination festival, also at Hawera, on October 3. The plays and players are:— “Peter and the Clock,” by the Little Theatre Drama Class: Misses Norma Nixon, Junne Goodwin and Pixie Kent. “Flickering Lights,” by Miss Maisie Instone’s pupils: Misses Doris Gilmore, Sylvia Davy, Joyce Goodwin and Vivien Jones, and Mr. Noel King. “Knight to Move,” by the Hawera Repertory Club: Mrs. W. B. Farquharson, Misses N. Duckworth, E. Buist and D. Thomas, and Messrs G. Chuck and G. Laurence. “Kestrel Edge,” by The Borderers: Mrs. B. C. Bennett, Messrs A. W. Lawn and T. P. McLean. “An Evening on Dartmoor,” by the Hawera Repertory Club: Misses Doris Bryant and Jean McNeil, Messrs R. Hill and T. M. Ellis. “The Rehearsal,” by the Hawera Technical High School: Misses Pat Henry, Pat Brown, Audrey Stewart, Peggy HayMackenzie, Myra Nowell, Barbara Thomson, Joyce Knightbridge, Noeline Death, Norma Thomas and Margaret Hill. “The Playgoers,” by the Hawera Repertory Club: Mrs. T. Twaddle and H. Walker, Misses Mary and Winifred Quin, Messrs. W. G. Simpson and M. R. Jones. “In the Library," by the Hawera Repertory Club: Messrs. R. S. Allwright, W. S. Gibson, F. Potter, C. J. McFadyen and Gordon Kemp. The programme has been arranged as follow: Tuesday, “Peter and the Clock,” “Flickering Lights,” . “The Playgoers” and “Kestrel Edge.” Wednesday: “An Evening on Dartmoor,” “The Rehearsal,” “The Signal,” and “Knight to Move.” Thursday: “Snobs,” “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals,” “In the Library.’ PATEA GARDEN CIRCLE. MEETING OF MEMBERS. Members of the Patea garden circle met this week, Mrs. S. Gunn presiding over a good attendance. A visit was made to the garden of Mrs. F. Spooner, where the bulbs were admired. Mesdames Gunn, Hills and Miss Hemingway were hostesses at afternoon tea. It was decided to ask Mrs. W. F. Sheild to give a talk at the next meeting on the staging of flower exhibits for show purposes. FLOWER SHOW AT KAKARAMEA. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH EFFORT. The funds of the Knox Church msision fund were assisted by a display of flowers and a cookery competition at Kakaramea this week. Despite adverse weather the effort was completely successful. Entries in both sections were of an exceptionally high standard, the visitors being entertained with an entertaining musical programme. Winners in the various sections were:— Flowers. Posies: Miss G. Hall 1 and 2. Bowl of flowers: Miss Joan Illingworth 1, Mrs. Carmichael 2. Best collection of bulbs: Mrs. Proffitt 1, Mrs. Herbert 2. Table decorations: Mrs. H. A. Sutherland 1. Buttonholes: Miss M. Illingworth 1, Miss B. Illingworth 2. Cooking. Scones: Miss Couchman 1, Mrs. H. A. Sutherland 2. Pikelets: Mrs. R. Hunger 1, Miss A. Hall 2. Gems: Miss L. Sutherland 1, 'Mrs. J. M. Welch 2. Sponge with butter: Miss Cowie 1, Miss Sutherland 2. Sponge without butter:. Miss Kettles 1, Miss Sutherland 2. A short concert programme was given, contributors being Mrs. MacDonald, Salvation Army officers, Mrs. F. Lund, Miss Cowie and the Rev. W. H. Wilson. At the conclusion, Mr. H. A. Sutherland thanked those who assisted in making the afternoon a success. He thanked Mrs. Sheild and Mrs.' Paterson, who had judged the exhibits. He apologised for the absence of Mr. Wilkinson who was in Wellington. A display of Oriental linen by Mrs. Hunter attracted attention. HOCKEY CLUB’S FINALE. WHAKAMARA ACTIVITIES. The Whakamara Hockey Club held its final day during the week-end, when Mr. Christie, president, entertained players and their friends to afternoon tea. Mr. Alex Davies (captain), on behalf of the players, thanked Mr. Christie for entertaining them. The members of the club and friends paid a surprise visit to Mr. and Mrs. Christie on Friday night and made Mr. Christie a presentation of a pipe and tobacco in recognition of the interest he had taken in the club during the year. In thanking the players Mr. Christie said it was a pleasure to be associated with them. They had done particularly well for a young club. A very pleasant evening was spent with games. Personal Items. Mr. W. Davies, who recently underwent an operation for appendicitis, has returned home and is progressing favourably. Miss M. Salt, Wanganui, is the guest of Mrs. A. Wrigley. HAWERA BUSINESS MEN MEET. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AFFAIRS. The monthly meeting of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce executive was held last night, those present being Messrs. B. McCarthy (in the chair), E. Dixon, B. C. Bennett, E. M. Bardsley, F. W. Homer and E. K. Cameron. The Railways Department general manager, Mr. G. H. Mackley, advised that in connection with the desire of the chamber for a conference on the question of imposing local rates as an aid to the port of Patea, Mr. A. W. Wellsted, commercial manager, would confer with the chamber. It was decided to suggest September 28 as the date of the discussion, which will be held at Hawera. Messrs. McCarthy, Bennett and C. G. Trotter were appointed Hawera’s spokesmen. It was decided to continue holding the annual examinations sponsored by the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. Mr. McCarthy was appointed delegate to the annual conference of chambers at Christchurch in November.
