VOICE OF THE PEOPLE
VIEWS ON CURRENT TOPICS DAILY NEWS DAIRY SUPPLEMENT. MINISTER EXPRESSES OPINION. (To the Editon) Sir,—l should like to take this opportunity of congratulating you and the staff of the Daily News on the excellent supplement published with your issue of the 11th instant. * have perused it with keen interest, and can say without hesitation that it is one of the finest publications' of its kind that it has been my privilege to see. The supplement covers every phase of the dairying industry, and presents in interesting form a review., of its history, development and future outlook, and I am certain it will be greatly appreciated not only in Taranaki but far beyond the borders of the province. The Taranaki Daily News is to be congratulated upon its very fine effort. It is one which might well serve as an example to the Press in other centres.—l am, etc., R. MASTERS. Wellington, Sept 12. THE PRICE OF ORANGES. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln yesterday’s and to-day’s Daily News there is reference to the high retail price of oranges at Invercargill, but in New Plymouth the retailers’ profits must be still higher. Some little time ago I purchased a case containing about 140 large Murray River oranges for 21s 6d, or about 2d each. The other day I ■went into a shop in New Plymouth and was charged one shilling for three Murray River oranges no better than the ones I got in the case. This shows a profit of about 100 per cent. It is most unfortunate that we cannot get this useful and healthy fruit at a price that will' permit it to be used as an ordinary article of diet, instead of having to pay a luxury price, and I trust that you will use your influence towards the reduction of cost of importing and retailing oranges.—l am, etC ” FARMER. Eltham, Sept. 11. Invited to comment on the position, a New Plymouth fruiterer stated that the price quoted of 4d each was by no means general, and had not been at any time this year. The average retail prices of fruit are published in the Daily News weekly, and have never risen to the figure mentioned by the correspondent. PEACE AT ANY PRICE. (To the Editor.) Sir,—lt was refreshing to read the two letters of your correspondents "Peace With the Right Spirit” and C. A. Hunt, in your issue of to-day, as an antidote to the advocates of the "Peace At Any Price” policy. If these poeple were to find themselves unde the domination of the Hun or the Bolsheviks they might sing a different song.—l. am, etc.,
