GOODWIN CRICKET SHIELD
MANUTAHI CLUB FIRST WINNER. TROPHY PRESENTED AT DANCE. The first season’s play in the South Taranaki Country Cricket Association was concluded by the presentation of the Goodwin Cup to the winning team., Manutahi, at a dance in the Manutahi hall on Wednesday night. There was a good attendance of cricketers and friends from Patea, Alton, Mokoia, Hawera and surrounding districts. The cup was originally presented to the Mokoia Cricket Club by Mr. J. Goodwin, Hawera, for annual competition between Mokoia and Manutahi. The interest in cricket displayed by neighbouring districts, however, and the playing of friendly matches led. to an association being formed, in which six teams joined, Mokoia, Manutahi, Alton, Kakaramea, Whenuakura and Meremere.. Two rounds were played, and Manutahi won after beating Alton by a narrow margin in the final. Mr. Goodwin was introduced to the gathering on Wednesday night by Mr. J. Archer, Alton, secretary of the association, who thanked Mr. Goodwin for the trophy, which had aroused a definite interest in cricket. ip the country. Mr. Goodwin said he had not thought when be presented the cup that it would cause a competition to develop in that fashion, and he was gratified that so many -young players should be brought into the game by it. As well as catering for the enjoyment and sport of country players he hoped the competition would go on and in time provide the neighbouring towns with promising • material with which to build up their teams. Mr. Goodwin congratulated Manutahi on its win, and said he knew it would be first to congratulate any team to take the cup away from Manutahi. He handed the trophy to Mr. Cliff Wills, Manutahi captain. Mr. Wills returned thanks, and said he hoped the competition would be close next year. The season had been noticeable for the good sportsmanship and good fellowship displayed. On behalf of the Manutahi club, Mr. D. M. Jillett, thanked Mr. Goodwin for his donation and the other teams for the friendly spirit prevailing. FOOTBALL AT HAWERA. MATCHES WITH VISITING TEAMS. Two Hawera club football teams will meet teams from other towns at the showgrounds to-morrow. The junior will play Johnsonville, Wellington, and the fourth will play Marist, Wanganui, i Both games should be worth watching. McClelland, B. McClelland; half-back, Hall; front row forwards, Gillespie, Hunter, Engel; middle row, Richardson, Jane, Laurie, Holmes; back row, Masterton. Emergencies: King, Cameron, Blackbum, Neale.
The Hawera fourth grade team will be: Merin, Brown, Sheehan, Oakes, Deroux, Worley, Oliver, Evans, Gerrard, Bamford, Nicholas (2), Appleyard, Hurley, England. At night the members of both the Johnsonville and Marist teams will be the guests of the Hawera club at a dance in the Foresters’ hall.
