‘EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF’
MORRO CASTLE DISASTER
PASSENGERS’ ALLEGATIONS
CONDUCT OF THE OFFICERS
WAS THE ALARM DELAYED?
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8.10 p.m. New York, Sept. 11. The Feders. investigation of the Morro Castle fire disaster heard the testimony of Mr. Eben Abbott, chief engineer, who said he did not visit the engine-room during the conflagration and that within half an hour of his being awakened he left the burning vessel in a lifeboat with 30 members of the crew and two passengers. He said he looked at the fire and decided that it was a case of every man for himself. A number of passengers gave evidence and all agreed there was a lack of organised effort to evacuate them. In a newspaper interview the assist-ant-radio operator charged Mr. W. F. Warms, the chief officer, who was acting as captain, with deliberately having delayed ordering the sending of SOS messages. • Several passengers gave evidence that no fire alarm was sounded. The passengers were awakened either by smoke or by their room stewards.
