CAREFULLY LAID SCHEME
THEFTS FROM AUCKLAND FIRM.
PLEAS AGGRAVATE OFFENCES.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Sept. 10
“A plea that both prisoners come of respectable families does not mitigate but rather aggravates their offences,” said Mr. Justice Fair to-day, when sentencing Douglas Russell Newman, aged 27, and Keith Bryson, aged 27. Newman admitted stealing gdods belonging to his employers, the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, over a period of three years, and Bryson adnTitted' selling the stolen goods for Newman. The judge said that Newman during the period had had ample time to consider what he was doing. It was a carefully planned scheme. Bryson’s case was rather different. He had apparently be.en induced by the other man to share in the scheme and the proceeds. Newman was sentenced to three years’ hard labour, and Bryson to two years’ reformative detention.
