GENEROUS BEQUESTS.

Details of the public bequests contained in the will of the late Mr. T. C. List show the spirit of service for others that characterised his life. The direction that part of the grounds of his home shall ultimately be added to Pukekura Park is testimony to the sincerity of his pride in the town and district and his desire to preserve for posterity the beautiful native bush he cherished with such care. His further decision to establish in due course a home for ailing children on the other portion of the “Maranui” estate confirms his deep and lasting interest in the welfare of children unduly handicapped by Nature or misfortune, and his belief that all that kindness and generosity can do to make them fit to become normal and useful citizens should be provided. The gift to the Boys’ High School shows that Mr. List believed that true education includes ethical as well as academic training, and that he was convinced that environment during school days plays a large part in the training for future citizenship. One other portion of Mr. List’s will is certain to be of public interest. It is that which affects the future conduct of the Taranaki Daily News. It is proposed to continue the Daily News on the principles so long upheld by its late proprietor. Independent in regard to politics, ever mindful that the prosperity of Taranaki depends upon the welfare of the great primary industries, but mindful also that the interests of town and country are one and indissoluble, the Daily News will maintain and, it is hoped, increase the influence and the service it has been its privilege to give to the province for the past thirty years. Its guiding principle will be the support of what is best in the public interest irrespective of measures or men who may share or oppose its views. Nor will there be found lacking anything that makes for the production of a daily paper of which the public and those concerned with its conduct can feel proud.
