KEMP BEATS MEULI
BADMINTON SEASON CLOSED. HAWERA CLUB’S CHAMPIONS. Champions and runners-up of the Hawera Badminton Club were found last night when the finals resulted; — Men’s singles: Kemp beat Meuli, 10-15, 15—4, 15-12. Women’s singles: Miss Buist beat Miss Kemp, 11—7, 11—5. Men’s doubles: H. Jones and Patterson beat Hewitt and Kemp, 15—11, 14—15, 15-3. ’ • Women’s doubles; Mesdames Farquharson, and Buist beat Misses Black and Pease, 15—3, 15—11. Combined doubles: Kemp and Miss Bright beat Jones and Mrs. Jones, 15—5, 15-5/ .
The chief surprise was Kemp’s defeat of Meuli. The latter was upset to some extent by the low ceiling, but Kemp nevertheless played a very fine game, some '■ of his drop shots being perfect. PATEA PRIMARY SCHOOL. £ MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. Congratulations to Mr. E. F. Hemingway on his re-appointment as chairman of the Wanganui Education Board were extended by the chairman of the Patea School Committee, Mr. R. E. Moore, and members last week. The hope that Mr. Hemingway would continue for many years in that capacity was expressed. The chairman stated that the asphalting of the area near the school for which the committee had £45 in hand, would have to be curtailed owing to the unemployed not being permitted to perform maintenance work. The recommendation that unemployed be allowed to assist with the work had been made by the local certifying officer. The area to be asphalted lyould be marked on a plan and submitted to the board’s architect. Mr. Bates, headmaster, reported that the roll number had increased to 186, the attendances being good despite sickness that had been prevalent. Miss V. Gilmore, assistant, had commenced her duties. It was decided to hand coats, for which no owners could be found, over to the relief committee.
The committee decided to protest to the Unemployment Board at the withdrawal of relief workers. Nurse Svensen’s transfer to the Wanganui clinic was reported by Mr. Mays, her place being taken by Nurse' Small, who was: attending the Waverley school. It was decided to record the committee’s appreciation of Miss Svensen’s services in the Patea district. It was decided to replace the broken windows in the scout den, future replacements to be made by the scouts. KAPONGA LEAGUE CYCLING. J. HOSIE WINS IN CLOSE FINISH. There was again a splendid finish in the Kaponga League Cycle Club’s road race on Saturday when in an exciting sprint down the home stretch J. Hosie defeated B. Walker by inches. The race was round the Manaia-OtakehO-Auroa-Awatuna block, a distance of 28 miles for which nine riders started. .The winner started from the two-min-ute mark, and Walker from the limit of seven minutes. The third man R. Edgecombe, who rode from one and a-quarter minutes, did fastest time, taking 72m 48 3-ss. , , The weekly race round the stock road for boys was won by Cameron with Fitzgerald second and Brewer third. Fitzgerald had a comfortable lead turning into the home stretch but skidded on the comer and fell. He remounted quickly, however, and held his position to finish second. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.
