FOREIGN SHIPPING SUBSIDY
BRITAIN WELCOMES ACTION ‘HAVE NOT HAD FAIR DEAL* JUSTIFICATION OF SUPPORT By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 7. "British shipowners are gratified by the point in the Australian and New Zealand statement regarding foreign subsidised shipping,” says the Times in a leader. “Not an impartial person could maintain that British shipping has had a fair deal in the Pacific, especially as the trade of the United States and Honolulu has been reserved for American vessels. “The Union Steam Ship Company’s statement that it intends immediately to call tenders in Britain for the construction of a fast steamer for the Pacific route is practical support for the view that British ship-builders can expect to benefit when reasonable treatment is afforded British shipping. “Trans-Pacific competition is only one instance, though it is a glaring instance, of subsidised competition. Happily British shipowners can look forward to something approaching a fair deal in the future.”
