GOLF COURSE AT WESTOWN

FAVOURABLE OPPORTUNITY. Many residents of the western suburbs of New Plymouth will be interested in the outcome of a meeting to be held in the West End Bowling Club's pavilion on Monday evening. For some time past golfing enthusiasts in these suburbs whose financial limitations have debarred them from playing on either of the two courses in the Fitzroy district, have had to curb their desire to play golf. However there now seems to be every possibility that these people will soon be able to indulge in this pleasure, and a golf course in close proximity to their homes will shortly become an assured fact. The meeting to be hqld will deal with the final arrangements incidental to the establishment of a golf club at Westown and the laying-out of a suitable course. Mr. C. Clarke has offered his property, which is within a few minutes walk of the Westown tram terminus, and the area thus made available is eminently suitable for a first-class course. Actually the land is situated on the Upper Westown bus route, and Waimea and Seaview roads which join Tukapo Street alongside the proposed course provide convenient access from Frankley Road and Moturoa. While for obvious reasons the course will be limited to nine holes for the first season, if sufficient support is forthcoming no difficulty will be experienced in extending it to 18 holes at any time, as there is unlimited suitable land immediately adjoining Mr. Clarke's property. By

the end of the present spring all the land on which the course is to be laid down ’u will be in excellent pasture and special attention will be given to the sowing of the greens and the rolling of. fairways. With a minimum of attention it is anticipated that both greens and fairways will be practically perfect, and golfers should not be troubled with the rough approaches and fairways usually associated with courses in the early stages of their formation. The club has also been offered a lease of a commodious and well appointed residence in a handy position for the purpose of a club house, and the supporters, of the course hope to be able in a very short time to obtain these premises for the club. Keen interest has been shown in the proposed club, and already approximately 70 members are in sight. All golfers will watch the progress of the scheme with considerable interest, as the desire for an additional course in New Plymouth shows strongly the great growth the game has made in recent years*
