TWO TOURNAMENTS HELD MOTUROA WINS PRIEST SHIELD. JOHNSTON CUP TO VOGELTOWN. The annual six-a-side tournament for the Priest Shield conducted by -the Taranaki Football Association was played on the New Plymouth racecourse on Saturday afternoon and was won by Moturoa B, which defeated Waitara in the final by two goals to nil. Five teams competed. Last year the shield was won by Albion.By defeating Waitara school by three goals to nil, Vogeltown A won the five-a-side tournament for the Johnston Cup, conducted by • the Taranaki Primary Schools’ Football Association. Vogeltown won the trophy last year. Thirteen teams competed in games that showed many of the boys to be promising players. The early rounds were completed in the morning. In the afternoon the match between Moturoa A and Vogeltown B, which had been scoreless at the luncheon adjournment, was brought to a conclusion. The semi-final and final were played later. Each game consisted of two spells of seven minutes. Corners counted when there were no goals, or the goals were even.
Results of the Priest Shield tournament - were;— First round: Moturoa B won by default from Albion; Pirates won by de-: fault from Moturoa A; Waitara one goal (Wilson) and one corner v. Stratford A . dne goal (Goodwin). Second round: Moturoa B 5 (Johns, Hill (3), Crawford) v. Stratford B 0; Waitara one (Wilson) v. Pirates 0. In the final Moturoa B defeated Waitra by two to nil. It was a fast open game. Moturoa had the advantage of a light wind in the first spell. Waitara at- . tacked from the start, Wingrove send- , ing to Wilson for him to test the goalie (Gardner). Immediately afterwards Moturoa went through to force a corner. Midfield play was turned in Moturoa’s favour, Crawford swinging a fine shot into the hands of Davis, in goal. A Waitara attack was cleared by H. Johns, who sent downfield to Hill. Davis ran out to block the winger but missed, and Hill lodged a shot for. the first goal, despite an attempted counter by the Waitara full-back. Moturoa kept, up the pressure. Davis defended against Hill and, seconds later, went full-length to clear a shot from Johns and concede a corner. In the second spell J. Collingwood completed an opening attack by „ sending a fine shot to be cleverly, saved by Gardner. Gardner dribbled through; to be dispossessed by Wingrove. Wai-. tara was conceded a corner. Johns set his side on the attack and passed to Hill, who when in a good position was stopped by Wingrove and passed back to Crawford; Crawford returned to Hill, who tested Davis with a good shot. Waitara got away and J. Collingwood, with nd one to beat, shot over the bar. At the other end Johns sent to Hill, who added the final goal. • ' : ' The following teams took part: — Moturoa B: J.
