JUVENILES AT MARTON

MANY WERE BACKWARD. GAY SHIEK AND LEGATEE IMPRESS. (By “Hurry On.’’) The eight two-year-olds who contested the Juvenile Plate at Marton on Wednesday came in for careful scrutiny in the birdcage .nd their performances were also watched very closely. Both the winner,. Severe, and the second, Symcony, were well forward, much more so than any of their op-* ponents, and this had a great deal to do with the result. ’ Severe is weU enough bred, being by Limond from the Absurd-Drax mare Drastic. She certainly finished on. solidly but was all out at the end. Had she been a classy filly she should- -have won comfortably; Symcony, who as her name suggests is by Gascony from Symbolism, showed a fine turn of pace but that was all. She appeared likely to win comfortably a furlong' from home but stopped as. soon as the pressure was applied. This pair may improve; ■it is too - early to state anything definitely but it does not appear as though they are likely to reach top classy In the cases of the third and fouith horses, Gay Shiek and Legatee, the position is different. The former, a full brother to Gay ‘Sheila and Gay Blonde, by Gay Shield from Lady Marie, is a well-made colt who shoiild improve a lot. He is' not nearly ready, yet he showed a good .turn of pace and hung on solidly. He looks like, proving a credit to his family. Legatee was the first of the Posterity s to race, and he created' a favourable impression. Like Gay Shiek he was not nearly forward enough to show his best, but he is a beautiful cut of a colt, who will improve' later on. He is full of possibilities. Of the others Prevail,’by Chief Ruler from the imported Bucks Hussar mare, Yeomanry, made most impression. She is a little on the small side but very compactly made. She gave the impression of being a ready-made galloper. In the running she was most unlucky, and it will be surprising if she does not give a good account of herself in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui next week. Lady Ruler by Chief Ruler from Tmowere, hailing from A, Cook’s stable at Te Awamutu, was quietly fancied but

i did not run up to expectations. Hunts- - man's Chorus showed no pace at all, and a Pomposity, a filly by Pompal from the r Martian mare, Makepicce, did not ime press.
