OPINIONS OF PROFESSOR
NEWSPAPER REPORTS. DENIED. SHARP CLASH IN THE HOUSE. , (By Wire—Parliamentary? Reporter.) Wellington, Sept. 7. A newspaper report that a professor from Auckland University College had declared that the time was’in sight when the Soviet system of Government would be in operation in New Zealand caused a sharp clash in the House to-night between Mr. S. G. Smith and members of the Labour Party, who asserted that the professor had denied this statement. Mr. Smith quoted the amounts paid in the way of subsidies and the revenue from endowments to the four university colleges totalling £64,000, and asked what were most people saying about the teaching of these colleges. The Rev. Clyde Carr: It is education. Mr; Smith: In some of the colleges to-day atheism, agnosticism' and revolutionary socialism are being taught. He added that those who had been watching the events of the last 30 years, during which the British Empire had come through all . the troubles of the times without imperilling the’system of government, were surely. not .going to have a professor saying that, the time was in sight when the Soviet . system of government would be functioning in New Zealand. ‘ -
Mr. W. E. Parry: He didn't say that. Mr. Smith: Did he deny it? A chorus of Labour members: Yes, in this morning’s paper. Mr. Smith: Well, he should not be in the company of these people. Mr. J. A. Lee: Why not? Mr. Smith: Because if he is part ani parcel of the British Empire he shortH be above it.
