TEACHERS’ SUMMER SCHOOL

TARANAKI COMMITTEE FORMED. PUBLIC LECTURES TO BE GIVEN. As the result of a meeting of teachers’ representatives hold at New Plymouth on Saturday a committee Has been formed to do organising and publicity work in connection with the annual teachers’ summer school gathering to be held at New Plymouth from January 14 to January 24 next year. It is expected that more .than 300 teachers will be billeted at the Boys’ High School during that period. Owing, possibly, to the present term holidays only ten teachers, mainly representative of primary schools, attended the meeting, at which Mr. J. A. Valentine presided. Mr. G. R. Ashbridge, secretary of the New Zealand Teachers’ Summer School Society, addressed the meeting explaining the necessity of forming a local executive and outlining generally the objective of the society. No attempt would be made by the school to elaborate classroom technique. The objects of the gathering were mainly social and cultural. Mr. Ashbridge also read extracts from, a circular letter by Mr. F. Milner, who praised the choice of New Plymouth as a venue and remarked upon the sympathy of the principal of the high school in making the high school buildings available as billets. The following executive was appointed, further appointments, officers and the personnel of various committees being left to the discretion of members: Misses Ritchie, Harper and Rybum, Messrs. C. G. Bottrill,, A. Diprose, D. Menzies, W. L. Wagstaff, T. Tayldr, M. Goldsbury and W. H. Jones. Mr. Ashbridge alsj announced a panel of morning lectures for those who attend the school. Most of the lecturers will also give addresses at night to which members of the public will be invited. The lecturers and their subjects are: Mr. D. M. Rae, M.A., “Impressions of a World Educational Tour”; Mr. Frank Milner, M.A., “International Position—a Survey of Recent Developments and Tendencies”; Professor W. A. Sewell, 8.A., B.Ljtt (Oxon), B.A. (Leeds), “The Mr. Johannes C. Anderson “Maori Art, Religion, Mythology, Folklore”; Mr. Ernest Jenner, A.R.A.M., “Music and Musical Legends”; Dr. A. G. Butchers, M.A., M.Ed. (Melb.), LL.B., D.Litt. (N.Z.), “Education,” Discussion Groups; Mr. K. C. Reid, “Folk Dancing.”
