H. SNOWDEN’S CYCLE RACE

LEAGUE UNPACED EVENT RUN. FUSSELL WINS HANDICAP RACE. An unpaced race (known as the club’s unpaced championship) was conducted by the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League on Saturday afternoon. Nine riders took part in the event, which was run from Waiwakaiho round the Inglewood block, a distance of 27* miles. A sealed handicap for the sweepstake was run in conjunction with the race and resulted in an easy win for F. Fussell, who surprised by his good performance. H. Snowden claimed the unpaced championship for 1934 when he clocked lh. Um. 17s. for the journey. Snowden’s time was HJs. better than that of W. Ashman, the runner-up, who at one stage of the race appeared a likely winner. Third place went to A. Ellis, who recorded lh. 11m. 335. At the conclusion of the race Mr. Des. George, vice-president of the league, introduced Mr. W. Roberts, donor of the trophy, who in presenting his cup to the winner congratulated Snowden on his meritorious performance. The riders were dispatched at twominute intervals in the following order: Ellis, Snowden, Burke, Gilbert, Fussell, Ashman, Eva, Stevens and Neighbour. The first riders set off at a solid pace with the assistance of a following wind, and when timed at the aerodrome, four miles from the start, Ellis had gained ten seconds on Snowden and 25 seconds ;on Burke, but on the uphill grade to Inglewood Snowden settled down to a solid pace, and by the tirhe Lepperton was reached had gained one second on Ellis, and Burke had lost 21 seconds to Snowden and 20 seconds to Ellis. -Gilbert and Fussell were holding their own at this point and Ashman was pedalling at a solid pace behind. When timed again at Inglewood Snowden had gained 24 seconds on Ellis and nearly U minutes on Burke. Fussell had almost overtaken Gilbert, and Ashman’s time to Inglewood was eight seconds better than that of Snowden’s, which was 39m. 18s. for the 15 miles. Over the hilly course Ellis excelled and gained from Inglewood home, but was unable to regain the time previously lost to Ashman and Snowden. Fussell rode a solid race from Inglewood and overtook Gilbert early, and Ashman appeared likely to catch the pair before reaching home, but .tired on the hills. Snowden picked up the time he had lost and gained 19 seconds on the homeward run, which gave him the honours from Ashman by Hi seconds. Ellis’ time was 4J seconds slower than Ashman’s, and the next best was F. Fussell, lh. 12m. 345. ,C. Neighbour was the only B grade rider to compete. The result of the' sealed handicap was: F. Fussell (3m.) 1, W. Ashman (*m.) 2, H. Snowden (scr.) 3, A. Ellis (scr.) 4, C. Gilbert (2*m.) 5, H. Eva (3m.) 6. The next races (final of handicap) series) will take place from Waiwakaiho on Saturday afternoon next. The A grade race is twice up the Egmont Road and finishing on the Avenue Road, and the B grade is to Waitara and back. MOUNTAIN RACE DANCE. The Burwood, New Plymouth, was crowded on Saturday night on the occasion of the fourth of a series of dances in aid of the mountain road race ■funds- Boulton’s Bohemian Dance Band

played the music and the supper was in the hands of the league’s ladies’ committee, comprising Mesdames D. George, Bocock, Donaldson, Gable, Williams, Beer, Misses Hall, Sturmey, Duffin and Beer. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. G. Sole, H. Bocock and J. Donaldson, while Mr. G. Beer was doorkeeper and Mr. L. Simons was in charge of the men’s cloak room. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Mr. Christianson and Miss Haskell.
