TRIP TO WAIKAREMOANA
AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION. “With Patrol Dowling, Wanganui, I made a tour of inspection of road conditions and places of interest and scenic beauty,” said Mr. S. J. McKee, service officer of the Automobile Association (South Taranaki) in reporting to the committee on Friday night on a trip to Lake Waikaremoana. From Hawera to Gisborne, via Napier and Wairoa, the roads were in good order,, and the road from Gisborne to Opotiki, via Waiaeka Valley, again was good. From Opotiki, they had travelled, said Mr. McKee, to Tirau, Rotorua, Waiotapu and Waikaremoana, and with the exception of “miles of soft road, the run was trouble free. From Lake House, Waikaremoana, they had gone to Taupo via Petane, "visiting Warrakei Valley, and from there to the Chateau Tongariro and home through Raetihi and Wanganui.
To any experienced and careful driver, • the route, the whole or any portion of it, was a trip worth making. The total y mileage was 1185 miles. During the month, said Mr. McKee in ■> his usual report, he had carried out * headlight testing at Hawera, Stratford, ’ Eltham, Kaponga, Opunake, Manaia and > Patea. With Mr. S. Ringer, of the Auto- " mobile Association (Auckland), he had » made the annual inspection of hotels and ’ camp sites in South Taranaki. Visits ’ had also been paid to Stratford Mountain House and Dawson Falls Mountain House. Mr. Ringer expressed himself as well satisfied, with all he saw. On the road Mr. McKee gave service to nine members, and information over the telephone! to 23 members. Seven lots of glass, two of nails and seven of boxthorn had been cleared. STATION BEAUTIFYING WORK. APPRECIATION OF MR. MACKLEY. The appreciataion of the Railway Department authorities of the voluntary work done by a number of Hawera people in beautifying the station has been voiced by Mr. G. H. Mackley, general manager, vwho has authorised the purchase of a large number of pungas for the extension of the work. When last at Hawera Mr. Mackey inspected the station gardens, accompanied by two or three of the small group of residents who have long interested themselves in beautifying work, and he promised to do what he could to further local plans for additional improvements. In the course of a letter to the Mayor of Hawera (Mr. J. E. Campbell) Mr. Mackley writes: “I certainly hope that , your efforts will be as successful as , every good horticulturist would wish ■ them to be. Again expressing my appre- ’ ciation of the efforts you and your coun- j cil are making in furthering a work that j has now reached the stage when it j speaks for itself end must appeal to . every citizen.” • 3 The pungas are being taken only from areas where the bush is being cut out. ( METHODIST ROSE AND PEA SHOW. * ANNUAL MEETING HELD.
