TOURIST VISITS TO EGMONT
STRATFORD CHIEF RAIL POINT. DECISION OF THE DEPARTMENT. Advice that the Government Tourist Department intended to make Stratford the principal rail point from which tourists would visit the eastern and southern sides of Mt. Egmont was referrea by a News reporter yesterday to the chairman of the east committee of the Egmont National Park Board, Mr. J. C. Robins, who said the announcement was one that followed an energetic campaign on the part of the committee to have Stratford, as the closest town to Egmont, the rail centre for tourist traffic to the mountain. Mr. Robins also stressed the value ot the Stratford-Main Trunk line in encouraging tourists from the north to visit the Stratford resort. Such visitors could arrive at Stratford by the night express at 5 a.m. and be at the summit by noon. If they desired they could return to Stratford again in time to catch the night express at 8.30 p.m. It would be possible by arrangement with proprietors of public conveyances to transport tourists from Stratford to the Stratford resort for 2s 6d to 3s each, inclusive of the tolls. ■ _ Those who wished to stay at Dawson Falls hostel would go there, but the east committee would encourage the use of the ski-ing grounds on the Stratford side,, which had much to offer in both climbing and sporting features. . On the other hand the tourist who wished to make Stratford his headquarters and visit the mountain periodically would find that transport to Dawson Falls was only 17s 6d for a car load and to the Stratford resort 12s 6d. Though the Stratford side had no hostel there was an excellent accommodation house with bedrooms, conveniences and a large living room under the charge of a resident caretaker.
