WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Whareroa: The monthly meeting of Whareroa Institute was held on Saturday.- The meeting was presided over by the president, Mrs. Larcom, with an attendance of 35. A report of the group committee meeting was given by the representative, Mrs. Aberley.’ A report of the Dominion annual conference at Wellington was given by the delegate, Mrs. Tozer. A sales table in charge of Mrs. L. Hicks and Miss A. Hicks did good business. Miss Blake gave a demonstration on quilting. The competition was for a plain sponge cake, the successful competitors being Mrs. Nicholas 1, Mrs. A. Paterson 2, Mrs. Mills 3. The judge was Mrs. Douglas. The hostesses were Mesdames Nicholas, Maule, Prestidge and Miss Reynolds. Kaimata: The monthly meeting of the Kaimata Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday. Owing to the inclement weather the attendance was not so good as usual, Mrs. G. Gibbins presided and in the absence of the honorary secretary, also the acting secretary, Mrs. -O. S. Blackboum acted as secretary. Mrs. P. Burkhart gave an account of a group committee meeting held at Tariki.. After correspondence had been dealt with the demonstrator, Mrs. Adnams, president of the Inglewood Institute, was welcomed. Mrs. Adnams had an extremely interesting collection of curios, most of them of great age. Each article had an interesting history, and Mrs. Adnams’ explanations were listened to with marked attention. The competition for the best worked d’oyley, judged by Mrs. Adnams, was won by Miss V.- L. Mullon first with Mrs. I. V. Buchanan second. Mrs. G. Gibbins thanked the demonstrator for her excellent entertainment. During afternoon tea Mrs. I. V. Buchanan, the Kaimata delegate to the recent Dominion conference at Wellington, gave a description of the doings of the conference and urged all members who could to attend next year’s conference, which was to be held in Auckland. Brisk business was done at the “bring and buy” stall. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mrs. O. S. Blackboum was elected honorary secretary in place of Mrs. W. Spray, whose resignation was accepted.

Turi Township: The celebration of the first birthday party of the Turi Township Women’s Institute was held in the Rewa Tearooms, Hawera, on Wednesday, 200 members and friends being present. The following institutes were represented: Normanby, Tawhiti, Te Roti, Whareroa, Taiporohenui, Ketemarae, Ohawe, Turuturu, Okaiawa and Rangiwahia (Feilding). At supper Mrs. W. Shaw, president, welcomed all present and thanked Mrs. Phillips, who had made and given a handsome birthday cake. After lighting the “one candle” Mrs. Shaw called on Mrs. Phillips to blow it out, Miss Gladys Baker, the youngest member of the institute, cutting the cake. A letter was received from Mrs. Webber (Edgecumbe, Bay of Plenty), a former president. Mr. J. E. Campbell, Mayor of Hawera, congratulated the institute on attaining its first birthday and wished the members many years of useful work. _ .

The following programme was given: Community singing led by Mr. H. Collier; duet and songs, Mr. and Mrs. Allright, Mrs. F. Kendall, Mr. W. G. Simpson and Mr. M. R. Jones; xylophone, Mr. Hintz; Maori haka, Mr. and Mrs. .Jones, Mr. and Mrs. 1 Allright and Mrs. Spragg; national dancing, Miss McAsey. Accompaniments were played by Miss Purser. Mr. W. Shaw was master of ceremonies for the dance which followed, to music supplied by Mrs. Muir. A play-reading entitled “Mr. Sampson,” given by Mrs. Strange, Mrs. A. Corrigan and Mr. W. Simpson, caused much amusement. Maxwell: The August meeting of the Maxwell Institute was well attended by members and friends from Westmere and Aramoho. One member was' enrolled. A flour bag competition brought forth many entries. The first prize was awarded to Mrs. Staite, the second to Mrs. J. Darbyshire and the third prize to Mrs. Mundy. There was a large entry for the pikelet competition, the result being: Miss Morrison 1, Mrs. Laird 2, Mrs. Harting 3. A buttonhole competition was won by Mrs. Woodley. A musical afternoon was provided by the Westmere visitors. The following was the programme: Pianoforte duet, Mesdames Cooper and Wilson; vocal solo, Mrs. Corliss; quartette, Mesdames Wilson, Corliss, Kitt and Miss Missen; violin solo, Miss Missen; vocal duet, Mesdames Wilson and Corliss; vocal solo, Miss Missen.
